State Committee Approves Open Carry Of Handguns

AUSTIN (AP) - The House Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety wants to take the concealed part out of concealed handgun licenses.

The committee voted 5-3 in favor of a bill that would remove the word concealed from the law that allows Texans to have a handgun license. The so-called “open carry” law would allow license holders to carry their weapons in plain view wherever they would be allowed to carry a concealed handgun. The rules for getting a license would not change.

Texarkana state Rep. George Lavender authored the bill that was approved Wednesday. In a committee hearing last week, advocates said the law would deter crime. Opponents warned it would create a dangerous and intimidating climate in densely populated cities.

The bill now goes to the full House for consideration.

I hope this passes. Its going to be interesting if it does. If I was a crook I'd look for an easier target.

To play devil's advocate, if a bunch of people OC, will the anti-gunners read up on the law more and we'll start seeing more 30.06 instead of the "no guns" signs?

You still have to have a license, though. I wish texas would go to unlicensed carry like Alaska and Vermont.

Completely agree. And while this is a good step, how many illegals found their way into Texas last year? The leaders of this state need to address a real pressing issue.

its not just the fee, though it does make it hard for poor people to afford, its also the notion that the government gets to keep a record of you, and can ultimately determine if you are able to carry. the state of texas in no way shape or form should be able to wrap any red tape or restrictions around the 2nd amendment of the constitution.

I honestly don't think both will happen. One or the other, no way will they allow open carry on campus'. At least I don't see it, I believe that would be a distraction in a class room.
