I am personal touch by this. Government assistance destroys ambition. My daughter inlaw and husband are always in financial problems. The third time this year they asked us for money was the piece of straw.

I said she should get a job while her husband is home. They said they can't or they will loose $600/month in public assistance. She has healthcare training. I think they would rather be poor beggars of the government than to go earn a living, then they don't need our help any more.

It doesn't in and of itself destroy ambition. When government assistance is adopted as a permanent lifestyle by an otherwise able-bodied person, it simply exposes and enables a lack of ambition that already existed in that person.

            I agree.

Some tough love needed in this situation. Freeloaders suck.

Well she is a trained phlebotomist and could make $15/hr or would take her 20 hours to make $600.

$15/hr seems a but higher than normal but there are quite a few phlebotomist jobs out there. I was looking for a new ER spot and saw lots of hospital based phleb jobs. Sad she is lazy

How in the hell does a free check in the mail NOT destroy ambition?

Btw, I would tell your worthless stepdaughter and her shitbag husband that the $600 they are taking every month already came out of your pocket and that they can go get fucked.

...Then there is federal housing assistance, totaling $77 billion in 2010. This includes expenditures for over 1 million public housing units owned by the government. It includes Section 8 rental assistance for nearly another 4 million private housing units. Then there is Rural Rental Assistance, Rural Housing Loans, and Rural Rental Housing Loans. Also included is Home Investment Partnerships (HOME), Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), Housing for Special Populations (Elderly and Disabled), Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA), Emergency Shelter Grants, the Supportive Housing program, the Single Room Occupancy program, the Shelter Plus Care program, and the Home Ownership and Opportunity for People Everywhere (HOPE) program, among others.
                      ...
Seriously?!?! A special housing subsidy for people with AIDS?

40 hours to make $600...so a week. I think the operative word that escapes her is "work".

Salary.com says she could rake in $23-35K.
How much does a Phlebotomist make? The average annual salary of Phlebotomist in Dallas,TX is $39,793 or $19 per hour, ranging from $32,257 to $48,252 and $16 to $23.

For an example I need look no further than myself.

In the 1980's I was working for a small engineering company as a land surveyor and their workload dropped to the point where they no longer needed their survey crew a full 40 hours a week. We were given the option to work 16 hours or so there a week, and apply for partial state unemployment benefits to augment the meager wages we earned working part time, which I did. The unemployment office had a decent database of jobs available, through which I searched and applied for those jobs for which I qualified. After a few months I was offered and accepted a full-time construction surveyor's position at a nuclear power plant under construction in the area at the time. That led to my taking a job a few years later with my current employer, with whom I have now been with for almost 27 years.

So to answer your question, the "free check" you speak of does NOT (lol at your caps) destroy ambition in all instances.
