  • Shrimp n grits

My dad has been telling me about shrimp and grits for the past few weeks. My family was recently down in Alabama/Florida and were served shrimp and grits, I guess it's a popular food down there but I've never seen it. Anyone ever eat this combo before or have any good recipes for it?

Sure I've heard of grits. I just never actually "seen" a grit before.

There are a few different styles, depending on where you are in the south. Most have shrimp and andouille sausage in them. The real variances come with what else goes in it. In South Carolina, it tends to be a heavy cream in the grits and often a bit of sherry. I was in D.C. over the weekend and had some that had celery, some peppers, a few onions and peas, and then I've had some further in the south that tend to have a cheesey grits with the shrimp. While some have been better than others, I can't say I've ever had bad shrimp and grits.

I've had them in Louisiana and they were awesome. NOLA grill on Frisco square has some very good ones too. If you really want to know though, you need to ask AnthonyS!

They're kinda nasty. Like finely ground over buttered oatmeal, with a slight gritty texture. Another one that needs to fade into the past.

Passed down from Indians (feathers not dots), and they're delicious if done right. They also vary from region to region, and I have yet to have grits I didn't like unless they were plain. Even then, butter helps and/or you can put some brown sugar on them.
