hay shortage?!?! Seems to me that every year I see lots of hay sitting in some field just rotting away. And I'm not talking about a few bales here and there, I mean field after field with 30+ round bales. I never understood why farmers go through the trouble of bailing it and then just let it sit there.

Usually they're sitting there because they want premium dollar for bales that are 15-20 dollars cheaper everywhere else. They'd rather it sit and rot than cave to market price. You have to remember, not all cattlemen have hay grounds and not all hey producers run cattle.

Walmart had them for I believe 1.69 a pound back during the 4th of July.
