  • Brisket Prices

Been watching Costco/Walmart...etc, is it me or are brisket prices getting out of hand?

I could have sworn I used to be able to 10+ lbs briskets for 20-30 dollars. Now they all have 50+ dollar price tags on them.

Am I shopping the wrong places or are beef prices sky rocketing?

They fluctuate from what I've seen.

Costco always seems high, walmart will go lower when its not around a holiday.

Man earlier this summer it was $1.99/lb and it was perfect, now it's like $3.50/lb and I agree it's getting out of hand.

price of hay goes up, price of beef follows.

That and the whole corn/ethanol thing. The drought has drastically impacted hay prices, though.

Yeah, google search showed that there is a beef shortage. I had no clue to be honest.

It shows that some people are paying 15+ dollar a pound for untrimmed brisket!

I'll smoke ribeye roast instead at that cost. haha

May have to buy a cow for the back yard.

well, a lot of corn production went to ethanol, and since that was a large part of feed for beef production, hay and other grains had to be substituted. When there is drought, hay and grain are both effected, thus the price goes up.

A lot of ranchers are thinning herds down since it just costs more per head for feed, and also the pound on the hoof has fallen.

I know a lot of ranchers quit raising beef because there isn't enough money in it to make it worthwhile any longer.

That really sucks to hear - not just from a budget point of view - but for America itself.

Yep, and it's only going to get worse.

They usually cull their herds going into summer time, which generally results in July 4th sales.

It's a big crappy cycle. The way it used to work is ranchers would buy hay out of state whenever we had a drought locally. Now with fuel prices so high though it prices that hay out of their budget so they stick with local stuff that'll grow during a drought, which of course results in less production.

hay shortage?!?! Seems to me that every year I see lots of hay sitting in some field just rotting away. And I'm not talking about a few bales here and there, I mean field after field with 30+ round bales. I never understood why farmers go through the trouble of bailing it and then just let it sit there.
