It's cheap, and widely available. That's really the only reason IMO. People who generally don't eat or don't care for fish, it's a good entry level fish. People new to fish aren't going to spring for Mahi, or CR Salmon for instance.

I don't want to just dive right in and then end up not liking any fish at all. I'm getting talked into trying out sushi also by a friend, she recommended starting off with California rolls. I'm just trying to open up to new foods.

Tilapia is like catfish. They eat shit, literally. Municipalities use them in water sewage and water treatment plants. They really are a garbage fish, and you can tell by the taste. I agree that it is a good entry, but don't stick with it for long. Once you graduate to more quality fish, you will wonder how you ever ate tilapia.

Only fried catfish, and even then, I don't eat it but once or twice a year. Same thing. It tastes dirty as fuck, just like tilapia.

Tethered by their necks to further restrict their movement, they're virtually immobilized for their entire 16-week long lives. Unfortunately, this confinement is common in the veal industry, despite overwhelming scientific evidence that it's inhumane and at odds with public opinion.

Even the American Veterinary Medical Association says that calves should be able to turn around and the American Veal Association—the veal industry's trade group—"recommends that the entire veal industry convert to the group housing methodology."

Additionally, Randy Strauss, CEO of Strauss Veal (the nation's largest veal producer) calls veal crates "inhumane and archaic" and says they "do nothing more than subject a calf to stress, fear, physical harm and pain."

The veal industry is a direct byproduct of the dairy industry and depends on it for survival, as all veal calves are the male offspring of dairy cows. (Dairy cows must be re-impregnated annually to continue producing milk, and half of their calves are male.)

I remember passing veal "farms" on the side of the freeway when I was a kid.. Just rows and rows of small boxes that the calves were kept in.
