I'd listen to them. When you touch/feel them it is thin gauge steel and will require a fair amount of maintenance. I'd also be worried about air flow, when smoking - controlling air flow is important and typically these lightweight ones are full of holes.

I recently bought another grill to use as storage for food while dealing with other food. It was similar to something like above, but charcoal only. CL deal for like 60 bucks. It had a little rust, but it expanded dramatically in 4 months. no biggy, just paint.

The biggest problem was it not being sealed well. So charcoal/wood just got too much air. Also thin steel makes smoking foods a little trickier since it won't hold the heat well.

Other than the airflow part, it all can be worked around. However, I'm a big fan of buy once, cry once. Great CL deals out there for what you're looking for and you'll never buy one again.

I don't have any patience for CL for something like this.

I wouldn't mind having to throw some paint on it and the smoking would be minimal, and not likely the 10-12 hours type of things. I will never be a master smoker like you. lol

My biggest concern is the rust issues and durability.

IDK.. I probably won't be looking to actually buy anything for another month or two. Guess I will do some more research.

The cheap sheet metal smokers have a few years of life to them.

Something that is made out of thick steel will last decades.

            preaching to the choir.

My smoker is still workable, but I really dont have a need to smoke much at the house. I really just want a gas and charcoal combo, but they are either really expensive custom built deals, or cheap gauge metal.

Hell, I may just end up with another gas grill and buy a little smokey joe for the rare occasion I want to grill over charcoal. I wasn't uber interested in smoking anything, just figured it would be nice to have the option.

The downside/upside to smoking food is you drink more for parties. I tend to be too damned drunk come serving time. Takes all my concentration to get food in without falling on my face.

Meh.. Leah found a deal that we could not refuse last night. Little bigger than my current gas grill (4 burners instead of 3), on sale for $100. Went ahead and bought that.

Sold out online, but many of the stores still have it. Ours is waiting for us to pick it up today:

Not the best ever, but for $100 I figured that even getting 3-4 solid years out of it would be ok.

I think ours is in Southlake. There seems to be plenty in stores though.

South Arlington (the old hypermart) has them, too. Thanks for the heads up Craig, I dont mind blowing $100 for a half decent gas grill.
