I grew up on shitty Oklahoma Tex-Mex for the most part and didn't really develop a taste for good Tex-Mex until I was in my mid-20s and living in Houston. I don't particularly care for "Authentic" Mexican food, although I think most of what I've had has been food you'd typically find in the border regions. I'd be interested in trying food from other, more prosperous areas of Mexico. As my tastes have evolved, I like New Mexico-style food the best. Lots of green and red chiles and tons of heat.

Slightly off topic, but I've finally found a solid family-owned place in OKC that has two menus - one Tex-Mex and one "Latin American". I've been blown away with the Latin dishes, especially the Peruvian Saltados and the Brazillian Fejoada. Great stuff.

The family and I were in Grapevine last week to do Great Wolf Lodge and I saw Mi Dia as I tried to navigate that constructon clusterfuck at 114/121. Didn't want to bring 4 kids in who wouldn't appreciate it, but planning on being back with just the wife to try it out soon....

Henry, take the old lady out for a special occasion an she'll wear your dick out when you get home. I've taken several dates there, and it's the same result every time.

Brad - the guy that owns it is a good guy, and owns the Bob's in GV, Winewood, Mi Dia (all three are right next to each other), he owns the Flip's across the highway, and another Flip's in Ft Worth. I went to high school with the Chef at MD, who also has his hands in some other restaurants around DFW. He is incredibly talented. He won't ever be a celebrity chef type (he doesn't like being in the spotlight), but his creativity and ability blows some of those big guys out of the water. He's very kind, down to earth, and not a stereotypical Chef. Gabriel has a really, really bright future. The reason I shout it from the rooftops, is because it's simply that fucking good. He used my test kitchen to develop the menu and recipes for 3 months, so I ate that stuff nearly every day during that time frame. I've had nearly everything on the menu, as well as many things that aren't.

You're not an asshole. You're just misunderstood.

So the only difference in tex mex and Mexican food is the cheese? Hmm

No, it is just one of the glaring differences.

Mexican is Mi Dia From Scratch in Grapevine, Tx. That's Mi Dia From Scratch in Grapevine.

Tex-Mex is anything but Mi Dia.

My mom has lived south of Guadalajara for the last 12 years. The food down there is really not that close to our Tex-Mex. No flour tortilla's (corn) or cheddar cheese, and most of the little eateries down there don't even offer those options. The chips are REAL thick, but after getting use to them, I liked them a lot. Black beans almost exclusively. Sopapilla's are always home-made and never ate one I didn't like. All in all, though, I prefer Tex-Mex.

Not at all. Flavors are different, and a slew of other things. But to someone who doesn't have a good palate, or isn't a foodie, that's the easiest way to tell.

Ya, I guess I prefer tex-mex, too. Mi Dia is good, but it falls behind some tex-mex places on my list of favorites.
