  • UFC buys Strikeforce

Didn't see this coming - especially in the "middle" of the Grand Prix. I suppose this means Fedor now has 3 fights left on his UFC contract, and we will get to see Overeem vs. the UFCs best. Probably not great news for Dan Henderson and Josh Barnett. Hope the June 18th card is still here. I wonder if Diaz v GSP replaces the Spider fight...

Zuffa LLC, owner and operator of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, has agreed in principle to purchase Strikeforce, essentially its lone remaining competitor in the mixed martial arts market, multiple sources with knowledge of the deal confirmed to ESPN.com.

UFC president Dana White told MMAFighting.com that Zuffa had purchased Strikeforce.

An announcement could come as soon as Monday.

Negotiations have been months in the making between representatives for Zuffa and Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment, which also runs the NHL's San Jose Sharks, various parties familiar with the deal said.

Silicon Valley in 2008 had agreed to a partnership with Strikeforce's parent company, West Coast Entertainment, a San Jose-based promotion created by Scott Coker in 1985.

It's unclear the extent to which Coker, the current Strikeforce CEO, played in the negotiations. Coker did not respond ESPN.com's requests for comment.

Ken Hershman, executive vice president and general manager of Showtime Sports, which has a long-term broadcasting deal with Strikeforce, declined through a representative to comment.

There were some early telltale signs of UFC overtaking Strikeforce ownership. I feel this will be good for MMA as long as Dana White and Zuffa don't start getting stupid with contracts.

From what I've been reading / hearing, is that there will be no major changes in operations of either company at this time. Scott Coker remains in charge of SF, all the fighters stay at least until the end of their current contract. SF has a contract with Showtime into 2012. After fighters / tv contracts expire, its free game.

Correct. Dana White gave an interview saying that it will be "business as usual" and the two companies will remain being run seperately as they were before. The only thing that will change is the parent company, but the day to day is all the same.

But then again, Dana has said alot of things. lol.

I wonder if Fedor will lose to anymore UFC rejects? I haven't really kept up with MMA since moving.

Werdum and Silva are "rejects"? Hardly. Fedor is and has been overrated for some time now. The times are just catching up with him now. He's been held back by his management in order to get big pay days that are guaranteed wins for him.

I think you took me a little too literally. Weren't they both fired from the UFC or did they leave on their own accord? You follow this shit a lot more closely than I ever have or ever will.

UFC didn't cut Werdum, his contract was up and they low balled him after he got knocked out by Dos Santos, so he signed w/ the showtime brand instead. Bigfoot has never been in the UFC. Both guys are quality fighters... maybe not future UFC champs, but solid guys.
