Cowboys offseason moves

Marcus Spears and Gerald Sensabaugh were let go, to test the free agency waters. Obviously, they could wind up back here on smaller contracts. This tells me they are trying to address the DL in a DL heavy draft, and they know of the problems at safety. Personally, I'd rather keep Sensabaugh than Ball, but I digress. There are a few big name free agents out there, but it appears they were impressed with the safety from OU as well (Quinton Carter).


I'm really surprised that they didn't drop Roy Williams and Marion Barber. They can still do so, once if/when the CBA is agreed upon. I just thought it would have happened by now.

You can't address that many positions in one off season. You're talking about depleting what's already a big need at O Line, getting rid of T-New, when there is already a lot of uncertainty at DB. Bennett, eh, I wouldn't miss him, but he's cheap and we need depth as proven by last year's carousel of TEs.

A lot of the writers are thinking Williams will stay, too, because there isn't anyone to step up at that position. I somewhat agree. I wish they could afford to put him out on his ass, but Ogletree had a really disappointing season, after a great season, so there is some concern there. Hurd is Hurd. He is what he is, and won't ever be more I don't think. And if they do let Barber go, there will have to be a third back to pick up either in FA or the draft.

Biggest needs are S, DL, and OL. That's going to be difficult enough to do with no extra early round picks. So adding another OL, RB, DB, and TE just isn't realistic.

I would go with a secondary pick in the first round if Peterson or whoever they really love is still there. Then look at the OL.

Agreed. But Phillips is already ahead of him on the depth chart, so no biggie. That dude (Phillips) could start on like 26 or so teams in this league. We still need depth. Twice last year, they had to sign someone and/or bring someone up from practice squad. Phillips had that season ender, and then the Witten concussion deal. Gotta keep more than two TEs on the roster.

I agree here as well. I'm just saying that spot will have to be filled, and there doesn't appear to be much to choose from. Not like last year anyways, where the RBs played musical teams.

I don't think that will be an issue. Remember, Romo has no faith in Roy. So going through reads, Roy isn't an option unless everyone else is laying down on the field. Plus, they hired Jimmy Robinson, which is one of the best WR coaches in the league (coming off a SB with Green Bay). Robinson is also the assistant O-Coord/head coach. He knows what we have in Dez. Expect to see a TON of development there. Just look at what Robinson did with the guys in GB.

Amakamura looks to be the guy as of right now. Of course, this will all change a million times on draft day.

I think Romo riding pine last year could be a big motivator for him. And if that's not enough, Kitna's stellar play should. McGee didn't have an earth shattering performance, but the kid wasn't bad at all, and I admit it shocked me.

On defense, and I've been screaming this for years now, they need a ball hawk safety. You look at Dallas D vs say Pittsburgh, or any other dominating D, and there are two distinct differences. Dallas lacks a ball hawk safety, and Dallas lacks in your face, physical DEs.

I'm perfectly fine with the offense. They only need minor changes IMO. AKA, get rid of Barber or only use him on 3rd/4th and short. I'd like to see Choice play more, and I want Felix to be used properly. Jones isn't a between the tackle runner, and they keep trying to make him be. It isn't happening. Use him on options, outside runs, screens, etc. Get him out in open space. He isn't built like Barber, he's not meant to shed tackles. He's meant to set the field on fire in open space.

A ball hawk safety is exactly what I want to see. We haven't had a good safety since Woodson, and he was more of a run stopper.

If they don't start using Jones properly I am going to throw in the towel and wait for a new regime. The inability to use talent correctly is obvious on this offense.

I differ on this. I agree to a point that he's not a leader. But as far as not being a winner? I disagree completely. Look at his stat line. It's as impressive as any other top 10 QB.

There are a million and one reasons the answer is no. You can't place that blame squarely on him. Small school caused him to go undrafted, coaching decisions have been less than ideal, players drop balls, etc. You can't go back to every single game and blame it solely on him. There are far too many contributing factors to be that close minded about it.

I never said he is the end all be all of problems for the Cowboys. I think they can win a Super Bowl with him. But, I think the odds are alot slimmer without a much better team around him.

He's a gunslinger, just like Favre. Keeping personal opinions about Favre and his drama out of the way, are you saying Favre is a loser? Besides, a LOT of Romo's picks were caused by incompetent receivers. You've watched games. You know how many of those picks came off tipped balls that the receiver couldn't hang on to. That's not his fault his receivers can't catch.
