I can get to work quicker if I run all the red lights. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.
I hate to even second guess, but it helps if you're sure you can out run the guy with the ball. Just because home wasn't "covered" doesn't mean you should just go for it. The guy just flat-ass caught him.

The coach sent him, not much he could do about going. I just don't think it was smart to make a bad situation worse.

Hamilton even said when the coach sent him home, he thought "this is a bad idea". He did what he was told. Just wish that judgment had lasted a few seconds longer. When youre beat, you're beat.

I agree. The coach should have realized who he was sending home, too. On the flip side, wasn't there a Detroit player who ran through a two-handed "stop-sign" from a coach, and it turned out to be the difference in the game?

Meh, it's a judgement call. He slides head first on almost every play anyhow, I don't see that changing with him.

If he's going to listen to the coach and attempt it then why would he half ass the play by sliding feet first if head first is what is going to be the only chance at beating the throw? If he's going to slide feet first on a play like that then he might as well stay where he is instead of knowing he's going to be thrown out and trying it anyway.

            • The bigger question here is, Darren O'Day. Why are wasting our time with this guy? He's proven he's not a closer in ANY situation.

              • Kinda tired of everyone blaming the coach. It isn't the coaches fault hamilton gets injured everytime a butterfly lands on him. If he didn't get injured there he would have got injured another day he decided to slide into a base. No ones fault but his parents for carrying down their brittle bones to their son.

Don't blame the parents, he's probably the one who refused to drink milk or anything else with calcium!

                  • From hearing the way the guys on the radio described the play, I thought it was a violent collision. When I finally saw the play, it was a routine slide.

Diving head first when there's not going to be a collision isn't much different than an infielder diving for a ground ball on the hard dirt, or an outfielder diving on the grass. Diving head first when the catcher is at the plate waiting for a throw or with the ball is much different, and is a bad idea.

Or dove or ran into the wall in the outfield.

Really dumb play considering the guy on deck.

This. Not the smartest move on the 3rd base coach's part to send him, and I think Hamilton should know a little better than to do that at this point in the season, but I'm not going to harp on the guy for competing. It's a freak thing that was probably going to happen one way or another if that's all it took.

LOL. Or drug use catching up to him.

The third base coach saw a chance to steal a run, and he took it. Ron obviously told the coaches to make them run agressive yesterday. The only person who screwed up in the whole thing was Josh.

Anyone think he may have hurt it on the slide into third before that?

He knew before he left the base that he wasn't going to make it, so why make a bad situation (getting thrown out) worse by diving head first is what I am getting at. His judgement seemed pretty sound to me right up until he dove.

                              • This was a very aggressive play, that went very wrong in the long run. I did not see it until last night on ESPN. As I heard it on the radio, I thought stupid play. Bad idea.

Personally, I am blaming Brad Penny. If he would have done his job properly, Anderson would not have sent Josh.

It was an exciting play early in a good game though.

O'day has lost all my confidence BTW.
