  • Here are the free agents that the Rangers have

    Carlos Gomez
    Ian Desmond
    Carlos Beltran
    Mitch Moreland
    Colby Lewis

    Team Options
    Derek Holland
    Jonathan Lucroy

Honestly I don't mind seeing Moreland and Holland leave. If we got the Ian Desmond before the All-Star Break then maybe. I think Gomez would be a low sign with high reward like Desmond's deal.

    • offer lewis, gomez, and beltran a two year contract. Pickup Lucroys option (obviously), and sign another starting pitcher (or two). Release Moreland and Desmond, they'll cost too much.

      • I think we'll pick up Gomez and try really hard for Desmond. Sure he fell off in the second half but he's a rock star defensively most of the time. I see Beltran following the money and it won't be from Texas. Moreland will cost more than he's worth and there are better options out there, plus internal candidates. Colby isn't going anywhere.

I see us dumping Holland and we'll definitely pick up the option on Lucroy and hopefully even work out a longer term deal.

Unfortunately the pitching market is pretty dry this year. Matt Latos, Buckholz, Fister, Scott Kazmir, Sabathia, Shields and Volquez are about it. Of those I'd go after Volquez and maybe Kazmir.

Trumbo, Cespedes, Bautista, Encarnacion and Beltran are all hitting the market so there is plenty of power available. I'd love to see Trumbo in a Ranger uniform playing first base.

Trumbo will cost a king's ransom, I'd just write that off immediately. Fuck Bautista, he sucks with his .234 BA, overpriced. Encarnacion is good. Holland needs to walk or take a pennies as a bullpen arm. Beltran is old, and he isn't going to fetch a big time long deal. If he liked being a Ranger, I'd see if you can nab him for a few bucks, if not, move on.

Our focus needs to be our starting pitching.

Desmond (in my opinion) was not a very good center fielder. He was overly aggressive and didn't have the necessary range or accuracy. Although he was great the first half, he was pretty garbage the second half. We saw what he really is. That's what he has always been. I wouldn't be fooled by his all-star first half - that isn't him. Just remember before he got hot he was literally the worst player in all of baseball. He led MLB in errors as a shortstop in 2015, and he led MLB in errors as a center fielder in 2016. He was a great acquisition for us, but he isn't worth real center fielder money. Billy Hamilton is a real center fielder. Desmond was a bargain - and that's the lens we should view him through.

          • If DeShields could match Elvis at the plate (all we need from him) he belongs in CF. again it will be the lack of starting arms that does this team next year. We won't spend the money and we are double A deep with bats.

            • Yes Moreland will be gone and don't be shocked when he turns into a 30hr / 100 rbi guy too. He is close now and gets about 150 less plate appearances than our other "starters." We don't need a 1b but it's clear Daniels and multiple managers have jerked Moreland around for 5 years. I expect to see him on a big name team soon.

              • Moreland is not a good hitter. He's the most streaky, inconsistent first baseman ever. He just had a career year and he was awful, imho. He's lights out for a month of the season and garbage the rest. He's very bad against lefties, as well. He is, however, very good defensively. That will be missed, but his bat is just not what you need from that position. Traditionally that's your position player with the most power.

                • A lot of baseball players are streaky at the plate. Moreland would have way better power numbers with equivalent at bats. He will succeed wherever he goes. He is a Matt Williams type and will never have an average that impresses. Gallo will be similar.

Not everyone has a Joey Votto and the Rangers won't pay anyone not 100 lbs overweight to play 1st anyway. And they sure won't pay for pitching.

I have a feeling our first basemen of the future is already under contract through 2020. Choo was on the DL 4 tmes this season, he's too fragile for the outfield and we need his bat.

When choo is healthy is obp can be impressive. He definitely helps us get starting pitching off the field earlier in the game. I've never thought of him at 1st but it's a solid idea.
