You guys are slippin. It's been 25 minutes since this was released and no one has posted this yet.
With Tony Romo stuck on IR-Boomerang with a broken clavicle, the Dallas Cowboys are making a run on quarterbacks.
Dallas traded for Bills quarterback Matt Cassel on Tuesday, the team announced. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport was the first to report the news. The Bills sent a 2017 seventh-round pick to the Cowboys for a 2017 fifth-round pick as well, NFL Media's Albert Breer reported, according to a Cowboys team source.
The news came just minutes after Rapoport reported that the Cowboys promoted Kellen Moore to the active roster from their practice squad.
Rapoport reports that the Cowboys are bringing in Cassel to act as a reliable backup to Brandon Weeden, but will be the third-string quarterback behind Moore until he learns the playbook.
Rapoport added that free agents Matt Flynn, Josh Johnson, Christian Ponder and McLeod Bethel-Thompson all had workouts with the Cowboys this week.
Cassel spent the entire offseason battling for the starting spot in Buffalo, but was ultimately beaten out by Tyrod Taylor. Cassel went into the summer as the presumptive favorite to take the job, but did not outperform the more versatile and careful Taylor.
There's no telling whether the Cowboys are planning on having Cassel eventually compete with Weeden for the backup role behind a healthy Romo, but it's worth considering. While Weeden was been in the Cowboys' system for a longer period of time, Cassel has more experience as a starter in the NFL, starting 71 games for the Patriots, Chiefs and Vikings.
I liked Matt Cassel when he played with the Patriots. Maybe he can do some good things here too.
