This would be a bit difficult to implement and balance for the maximum level of competitiveness, but I think this is the best way to improve F1.
VARIETY
I would suggest putting more mandated specifications on the chassis with the only freedoms allowed being nose cones, front and rear wings, winglets and suspension.
Allow teams to use:
- this generation's 1.6L turbocharged V6 with the dual hybrid setup
- last generations 2.4 V8 with the single electric (KERS)
- 2 generations ago 3.0 v10 with no electric.
hell, allow a v12.
the key would be balancing these power units by plotting the max theoretical power output and imposing weight and fuel flow limits.
I would guess the current gen v6 should be the heaviest as the fat powerband from its 3 forms of power allow it to have the a big advantage out of corners.
The v8 with KERS would probably be allowed to flow a bit more fuel and weigh a bit less (-100 lb.)
The v10 may have the highest peak power but lacks down low with no electric or turbo torque fill, thus allow it to use a bit more fuel flow and weigh a bit less (-150 lb).
Tt would result in a symphony of sound and make battles all around the track. I would guess RBR would choose the v8, ferrari the v10/12, and mercedes and mclaren choosing the v6t.
