        • Saw the game last night it was awesome.

          Little triva from last night.

The Rangers, who have four walk-off wins, now have five shutouts in their first 17 games. The only other American League teams to have accomplished that since divisional play began in 1969 are the Orioles from that year, the 1981 Rangers and the 1990 Brewers. Perez has been a part of two of those shutouts and has pitched 17 consecutive scoreless innings.

You don't bunt because the guy on deck is "the king of double plays."
                Say what mutha fukka???

ARLINGTON — The manager’s job: Put players in a position to succeed.

The manager’s conundrum: How do you do that with a guy hitting .083 with the lowest OBP in the majors over the course of his career and who leads the team in double-play grounders?

The solution: Turn the grounder into a productive at-bat.

And that’s what the Rangers did twice with struggling J.P. Arencibia on Thursday on the way to an 8-6 win over Seattle. It ended up bailing starter Tanner Scheppers out of another start crippled by a big inning and giving the Rangers three wins in the four-game series.

Twice in key situations, Rangers manager Ron Washington bunted Leonys Martin ahead of Arencibia, ostensibly to move runners to second and third. Twice Arencibia delivered ground balls that would otherwise have been double plays.

One grounder tied the score after the Rangers lost a four-run lead. The other gave them the lead for good. And if it was something of a hedge bet, it was a smart one. Arencibia had come to the plate with a runner on first and less than two outs five times in the first 15 games of the season and bounced into a double play three times.

“I was just trying to make certain that when we had a chance to score, we took advantage of it,” Washington said. “You have to show confidence in everybody. It’s going to take all of us. I know he’s been struggling, but he’s also hit the ball hard. I knew he could deliver. He delivered us two runs.”

The Rangers were so intent on getting Arencibia the chance to drive in the run that Washington gave Martin the bunt sign even when he was down 0-and-2 in the third inning with the Rangers trailing by a run. Martin squared early, got the bunt down and gave Arencibia the chance.

The Mariners did their part, also. They played the middle infielders back, showing a willingness to surrender the tying run for a ground ball. Having noticed the infielders playing back, Arencibia watched a fastball in the dirt from Erasmo Ramirez and then bounced to shortstop. Mitch Moreland scored the tying run from third on the routine out.

“If I didn’t notice, I wouldn’t really be doing my job,” said Arencibia, who has one hit in his last 26 at-bats. “I’m just trying to help the team win. We did a good job of moving the runners. They played the infield back. I got the job done.”

When the situation arose again with the score tied in the fifth inning, the Mariners again played the middle infielders back, willing to surrender the lead for an out. Arencibia got a change-up from lefty Joe Beimel and hit it hard toward second base for an RBI out. The Rangers scored another run on a wild pitch.

Then again, the Mariners seemed more than willing to help the Rangers out strategically over the final two games of the series. With two outs in the ninth Wednesday, manager Lloyd McLendon chose to pitch to Martin instead of walking him with a base open to face Arencibia. Martin singled home the game-winner.

On Thursday, McLendon chose to have Ramirez walk Prince Fielder with two outs and one on in the first inning to face Kevin Kouzmanoff. It was the first time this season an AL hitter had been walked intentionally in the first inning. Kouzmanoff, the Rangers’ hottest hitter, followed with a double, and Moreland added a two-run single.

“I wanted to make them pay for it,” Kouzmanoff said. “I knew what they were trying to do, and I was just trying to hit one hard and do something with it. It’s been happening with Prince a lot. He’s the big bat.”

With Adrian Beltre out of the lineup, Fielder, even though he’s been inconsistent, is the Rangers’ one big bat. And when opponents have the chance, they aren’t going to let him beat them.

It becomes paramount for the Rangers’ manager to put his other players in the best position to succeed.

“Productive at-bats aren’t always hits,” Washington said. “The situation we were in, we needed production in some way. [Arencibia] succeeded.”

                • Hopefully Harrison can bring this type of performance with him up to the big show. Looks like he's probably close to returning.

Harrison's rehab start for Double-A Frisco on Saturday night went smoothly. He got through eight shutout innings, throwing 86 pitches and 54 strikes. He walked one and allowed three hits.

                  • Where is the quote from Washington saying he didn't want to give Arencibia a chance to hit into double plays?

                    • I don't want Arencibia near a bat, period.

Both he and Beltre made the trip to Oakland. You can probably pencil them both in for Friday's game in Seattle.

The gif of Elvis trying to hit on a pitchout is glorious. It worked though since the ball sailed into center field.

                              • For all of the Rangers' injuries/issues, we've suddenly secured the tie for 3rd best record in baseball. Hmmm. Will be nice to see what happens if we can get all our guys healthy after the All-Star break.
