Report: Prince Fielder 'seriously considering' season-ending surgery

Rangers first baseman Prince Fielder is "seriously considering" surgery to repair the herniated disk in his neck, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The procedure would be season-ending.

"I think he's disappointed that he can't be here not only for this series but for his team," manager Ron Washington said before Thursday's game against the Tigers, Fielder's former team. "It's a situation where there wasn't anything he could do about it. If he could, he would be here."

Fielder, 30, received a nerve-root injection last weekend, but Wilson writes that does not remove the chunk of disk that is pinching a nerve and causing weakness in Fielder's left arm. Only surgery can fix that. He could either play through the weakness or have the surgery. No final decision has been made.

Acquired from Detroit over the winter, Fielder has hit .247/.360/.360 (100 OPS+) with three home runs in 42 games this season. Obviously the weakness in his arm could be contributing to his relatively slow start. Fielder hit .279/.362/.457 (121 OPS+) with 25 homers in 2013, his worst season since his rookie year.

The Rangers owe Fielder approximately $130 million through 2020. Although the team is built to win now, they need to do what is best for him long-term given that investment.

They do a physical, but apparently they don't check their neck for this type of issue.

I would be asking for a full body scan. X-rays. everything. before I gave a guy that much money.

I don't think hell be that bad. At least he's out there giving a damn. He runs to first base, dosent jog. So I'll give him some credit.

Based solely on genetics and not taking into account modern medicine, training and a field that caters to him he should still be good for 30+ homeruns and 80-90 rbis a season until he's 35. He turned 30 two weeks ago, he'll be a free agent in 2021.



Fielder wants to play every day and he gives 100%. Hamilton takes himself out of games when he's feeling dizzy or drinks too many Red Bulls. We're paying Fielder $19m a season, the Angels are paying Hamilton an average of $26.5 for the next 4 seasons.



Compare Fielder to guys like Teixeira, Pujols, Votto and Napoli and he's worth the money/risk. His dad was a very good player into his mid 30s and wasn't groomed from birth to be a ball player. He may not put up hall of fame numbers but we also aren't paying him Cabrera or Pujols money either.

He had this neck issue last season and didn’t tell anyone. He never disclosed this information to the Rangers because no one ever asked. If he had told them this there's no way in hell Daniel's would've ok'd to aquire him. Maybe after surgery he'll be worth something next year.
