Based on two examinations, the Texas Rangers decided on Tuesday that left-hander Matt Harrison, the opening-day starter, will not pitch again this season.

Harrison experienced numbness in the left hand during an injury-rehabilitation start with Triple-A Round Rock on Friday. Club medical director Dr. Keith Meister and back specialist Dr. Drew Dossett determined Harrison had not sufficiently recovered from two back surgeries this season to be able to pitch. Dossett performed the surgeries.

“His back is not where it needs to be,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “It needs additional rest and rehab.”

Because Harrison’s back was not strong enough, he made changes in his delivery that caused the numbness. The examinations found no structural damage to the elbow or shoulder, and Harrison will not require another surgery.

The Rangers had hoped to have Harrison, who made only two starts this season, back in September. Without Harrison and right-hander Colby Lewis, who will have hip surgery next week, the Rangers again lack rotation depth. The next starting pitcher on call would be right-hander Josh Lindblom, with Round Rock.

General manager Jon Daniels said he will again look for rotation depth.

“Most concerning if we have another issue,” Daniels said. “We’re comfortable where we are, but you can never have enough, as we’ve seen the last two years. This is another example.”

He is a free agent after this season, it sucks for him since he could have made truck loads of money if he were productive this season. At least he wasn't that expensive.
