The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 1 "Once the transition starts, there's no turning back. Fortunately, she's got a ton of friends who have already been through it themselves! Bonnie (played by Kat Graham) is Elena's no-nonsense best friend on the show, and is also a witch. The ring that Stefan (played by Paul Wesley) gives to Elena is not an engagement or promise ring. It's a daywalker ring. Daniel Gillies, who plays Elijah, recently talked to MTV about things changing on set once Dobrev got to be a vampire. "Nina Dobrev has become vicious. She's become a vicious, horrible diva. I can't even describe it," Daniel dead-panned. "She's driven to set even when it's indoors... Nobody's allowed to look at her. You have to look at the ground between takes... We end up doing most of our work to a green screen or to a tennis ball held in one of the [assistant's] hands. It's become nightmarish.
