When I was racing back in the day I understood Lance's bpm had to be higher than those around him to suffer from lactic acid effects. This always made sense to me as to why he would attack the hill stages to gain time advantages.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, Lance (or his corporation) helped fund the testing during the time he was competing (or longer). Not sure if that's true, or during what time frame. That kind of thing does raise suspicion just as much as it shows his support for clean competition.
