  • Drew Brees re-signs

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints reached a deal on par with the quarterback's record-setting play, giving the team's fans some news they can celebrate after an off-season rife with turmoil.

The team announced Friday that it had agreed to a five-year contract with Brees. A person familiar with the deal said it's for $100 million, with $60 million guaranteed.

The deal will pay the quarterback $40 million the first year, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because financial details had not been publicly announced.

Brees' new deal tops the previous benchmark contract for elite QBs set by the five-year, $96 million deal Denver gave earlier this offseason to Peyton Manning, who is three years older than Brees and sat out last season while recovering from neck surgery.

Had a deal not been reached, the tender for a quarterback was worth $16.3 million. Brees would have had to play for that amount or hold out for a better one-year deal, which would have left his long-term future in New Orleans uncertain.

Now Brees is set to report for the opening of Saints training camp on July 24, a needed dose of good news for a club whose off-season has been plagued by the bounty scandal that resulted in the season-long suspensions of head coach Sean Payton and linebacker Jonathan Vilma, among other sanctions.

All that money and 1 ring. Chances of getting another one in the next 3 years are slim to none. Basically a waste of money.

If Brees is still playing at a high level after three years, the Saints will have him for a cap number of $19million and $20million the year after that. So about 61million is guaranteed in the first three years.

Brees' agent purposely set it up so the Saint have to make an early decision after the 3rd year on cutting or keeping him. So you're right, there is a very good chance he'll be gone.

But Bree's can also renegotiate his contract after those three years and give the Saints a better cap number while making even more money. Winning a SuperBowl for NOLA earns you a shit ton of clout with WhoDats. This contract negotiation proved that. WhoDats easily ignored BountyGate and the alleged wiretapping thing (which may be much of nothing) but they were ready to tar and feather Mickey Loomis if he didn't get the Bree's deal done. Just look at how much the fans adore Archie Manning and he never even made it to a playoff game.

Meanwhile, fans are probably thinking of how they can remove the Joan of Arc statue in Jackson Square to make room for bronze sculptures on Peyton and Brees..
