  • Thanks for ruining the Stanley Cup game 6 refs.

LA goes up 3-0 on NJ, just to have NJ come back with two wins to force a game six. So just as the Stanley Cup series is getting good to watch, the refs decide to screw over hockey fans everywhere. In the first period they call a five minute major penalty on NJ for boarding. Meaning that LA has a man advantage for five minutes no matter how many times they score, and the offending player is ejected. The penalty itself was barely worth a regular two minute minor, and wouldn't of even been a penalty if the refs had decided he was playing the puck rather than the player. Which the puck WAS in the players possession when he got hit. This isn't even the worst of it though. The worst part is that LA had just done the same thing to NJ 30 seconds prior, to a player that didn't even have the puck, with NO penalty whatsoever. So a bad call, an over exaggerated penalty, and three consecutive LA power play goals later the game is ruined in the first period. No matter what team you're cheering for, what was turning into a great series for a sport that really needed a great series, was just screwed up by over zealous refs. Obviously there's nothing anyone can say or do about it, but it really pissed me off. So I figured I would get it off my chest, and rant a little bit on the internet. So thanks refs, for screwing hockey fans out of a decent Stanley Cup series.

Pretty sure they only call boarding when there's blood or an injury. There was blood.

    A boarding major, that is.
How do we forget ourselves? How do we forget our minds?

There was definitely blood lol, but I don't think the boarding penalty depends on it. I may be wrong about that, but the announcers were talking about the prior hit being boarding with no call also.Honestly I'm cool with them calling a penalty, but not the 5 minute major + ejection that they handed out. Five minutes of being down a player in the NHL is devastating to a teams chances. It wasn't a cheap shot like you would expect from that big of a penalty. The guy had the puck, he was just a little further from the wall then he should of been. He didn't get injured either, it was mostly just a bloody nose. My main thing is that the hit wasn't anywhere near bad enough to ruin the Stanley Cup series over. I've seen much much worse that was only called a minor, and that was in meaningless games.

You got me wondering, so I checked on it:

41.1 Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently in the boards.

Those ones are always tough calls. A lot of time the player with the puck puts himself in that position when they make that quick cut instead of taking the hit. But it is what it is.

          Boring series though.

The playoffs were over after the Pittsburgh / Philly series and as soon as the Vancouver idiots were eliminated.

I feel that was the appropriate call. It's a shame it changed the entire game, and the season, though. I also agree they missed the call on the other end.

Ain't that the truth. Philly vs. Pitt was a hell of a series.

If you board em and cut em, 5 minutes minimum. Period.
