  • MLB Draft?

Astros have the #1 pick, who you think they will take???

pitcher? Appel??? Gausman??? Zimmer??? catcher Mike Zunino?? or HS outfielder Byron Buxton?

    does anyone besides me care?

    god bless.

There are only 23 other people in the country that care about the MLB draft, and not a one of us cares about the 'stros.

But everything I've read indicates Appel. That said, the MLB draft is as wildly unpredictable as anything in sports.

I'm interested to see what the Rangers do with 5 picks in the first three rounds (including the comp round).

I saw the kid for Clemson that they had slated as #3 pick this weekend. He looked good at times at the plate, but I didn't think he was #3 material. I'm just now getting into "draft mode" where I'll really start to look at the college kids on the board and start reading about the high school ones. I hope the Rangers (and my Braves) just load up on pitching. Unless there's a guy out there who can just mash, you have to just draft arms.

Im defenitely interested to see what they do with those picks. I really like the fact that they have 5 picks before the Angels even get one. Hopefully at the very least they can get some good trade bait.

I expect to see 3 of those first 5 picks be pitchers. Like Juiceweezl said, pitching sells in this league. Pitching prospects can buy bats, but it doesn't work so well the other direction.

My question is what the hell are the Rangers going to do with Profar? Dude is murdering in AA, but I don't know what they're going to do with him.

I have been wondering the same thing. Maybe Kinsler to right(or DH because I dont know if he has the arm for the outfield), Cruz to left, Andrus to second, and Profar to short? From what I have hear Profar is a superior defender to Andrus. These are just random ideas that have come into my head. It is definitely a good problem to have though. I also kind of like the idea of groom Olt for 1B.

I watched Andrus up close the year he spent in Frisco. By that I mean second row at 3rd base next to the dugout. I've seen Profar several times already, and he's very good. I still think Andrus is better. That guy makes difficult look routine and then makes impossible plays. I saw him backhand a ball that the 3rd baseman missed in Frisco, plant & jump while throwing a one hopper to first, land, take another stride to stop his momentum and get the guy out. Why was I so amazed at the play? Because he had one foot across the left field foul line when he stopped moving after the throw.

Andrus is sick. I think the Kinsler to the outfield move makes the most since.

Andrus also has a distinct ability to make the routine look impossible. The difference between him being good and great rests in his ability to find permanent focus at some point.

He's what, 22? He's hitting way better than I ever thought he would at the ML level. Ask the pitchers what they think about him. That speaks volumes about a guy defensively. He's an All-Star shortstop. It's going to be hard to move him anywhere for a guy that's tearing it up at AA. Remember, a year ago everyone was talking about Elvis being Derek Jeter's replacement in pin stripes.

He certainly has time to figure it out as young as he is, but he's also been in the majors for 3 full years and is still making those same dumb errors. He seemed to have shaken it off for the first part of this season, but they've come roaring back with a vengeance in the last few weeks.

I'm not at all saying to move him for Profar, because we have no clue what Profar is going to do at the Major League level. Andrus is fantastic and one of the best infielders in the league, but he's not Jeter, yet.

He's better defensively than Jeter. Jeter would make the spectacular, smart baseball plays, but he sucked at fielding. A-Rod was a better defensive shortstop than Jeter. Jeter is just the super competitive, make a play and get a hit when you need it guy.

I think you have to look at SS in two ways. There are guys who can get away with hitting .240 because they are superb with the leather. There are those that are average or a little better fielding but hit over .300. Occasionally you get a guy who is both. Elvis is that type of player. In my 38 years, I think Ozzie Smith and Omar Vizquel are the two best defensive shortstops I've seen. They were both decent hitters too. I don't think anyone can match Vizquel for hands. I think Elvis has all the tools to be as good as those two guys with the leather, and yet be better offensively by a mile. I just hope he can put it all together.

Andrus can make some amazing plays, but then he'll turn around and blow a routine play.
