Steelers safety Troy Polamalu has been named the AFC defensive player of the week after the Steelers’ last two games. But he’s not expected to get a chance to make it three in a row.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Polamalu is unlikely to play against the Jets on Sunday.

Polamalu had already been struggling with a leg injury, and he aggravated it on a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown in last Sunday’s win over the Bengals. Polamalu had another interception near the end of the game, and he followed that with a bizarre, risky decision to lateral the ball. Some of his teammates have said the reason he did that is his leg was hurting so badly he didn’t want to run any further.

If Polamalu is out, Ryan Mundy or Will Allen will start in his place.
