That said, calling it a full on relapse is a bit premature at this point. All it says is he had a drink, and that's all the information that's out there. I'll hold my judgment.

O'cmon man...I'm dying to hear the logic behind your theory. It's either a relapse or a return to use, neither of which are sobriety.

On another note, I read a really good article about why he's such a risk to sign a long term contract. Most big-time long term contracts are insured (through carriers) by teams, in the event something happens where the player can't fulfill the length of the contract, i.e,career ending injury. Hamilton is pretty much uninsurable due to his track record of abuse and injuries, which means that the Rangers (or whatever team he signs with) would have to shoulder the entire financial burden. Hell, under the right circumstances he could get banned from the league and still get paid.

It's a poor choice, no doubt, but having one beer just doesn't constitute a relapse to me. By definition, a relapse is a return to a former state of being; in relation to alcoholism, that consists of reverting to a state where you feel you need to drink or be drunk. If you just have a beer and that's as far as it goes and there's no emotional attachment or need to have another then that's not a relapse, to me. But I'm no expert on alcoholism and that's really just my interpretation of the term "relapse."

I'm well aware that AA's definition of relapse includes any time you have one drink, I just disagree in the practical application. They're working under the assumption that one drink probably leads to two, which probably leads to three and so on, and they're generally probably right. But their definition hinges on what ensues after one drink, so if nothing ensues after one drink I don't see how it's a relapse.
