  • Mayweather announces fight with Cotto

So yeah, once again I hope Floyd " I am full of myself and beat up those around me" Mayweather loses this one:

With a blockbuster showdown against Manny Pacquiao ruled out, Floyd Mayweather Jr. will put his undefeated record on the line against Miguel Cotto.

"I'm fighting Miguel Cotto on May 5 because Miss Pac Man is ducking me," said Mayweather in his latest Twitter taunt of the Filipino superstar.

Mayweather agreed months ago to fight May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. A judge even postponed his upcoming three-month jail term to allow him to meet the obligation.

Mayweather said he was ready to go toe-to-toe with Pacquiao, but boxing fans were left frustrated as the long-awaited fight once again failed to materialize.

In a press release announcing the upcoming fight, Mayweather said it will be a stern test for him to move up one weight class to face Cotto at 154 pounds.

"Miguel Cotto is a world class fighter who can never be taken for granted and continues to prove he is one of the best in boxing. It will be a challenge for me to compete with him at this weight, but this is the type of test I thrive on and gives me the motivation to train even harder," said Mayweather.

Earlier, Mayweather appeared in Las Vegas at a hearing of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which granted him a license for the May 5 bout. The license was given on the condition that Mayweather comply with a judge's order to report to jail June 1, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The 34-year-old was sentenced to 90 days behind bars after pleading guilty to a domestic assault on his ex-girlfriend.

Cotto is nearly two months removed from a dominating 10-round TKO over Antonio Margarito at Madison Square Garden.

The 31-year-old Puerto Rican star oozed confidence on his chances to hand Mayweather his first career defeat.

"I am here to fight the biggest names in boxing," Cotto said in a statement.

"I've never ducked anyone or any challenge in front of me. ... That is what the sport of boxing is all about; making the fights that the fans want and deserve to see. On May 5, stay tuned, because I will convincingly beat Floyd Mayweather."

Cotto is 37-2 in his career, with 30 knockouts. His only two defeats came to Margarito, who one fight later was found to be using an illegal substance in his gloves, and to Pacquiao in a 12-round TKO in 2009.

Cotto will put his WBA super welterweight belt on the line in the contest. Mayweather, at 42-0, is the world welterweight champion, usually competing at 147 pounds.

In his last fight, Mayweather scored a controversial fourth-round knockout of Victor Ortiz. He landed the decisive right hand while Ortiz appeared unaware that the referee had restarted the right after a stoppage.

Hell yeah, go Cotto. I thought the fight with Paq didn't happen cause Mayweather knows he's gunna lose, and wouldn't take a 50/50 split of the money.

The most recent one was mayweather wanted to fight paquiao on may 5th. Paquiaos camp said June 9th.

Take that however you want but i think both sides are being bitches and after both of their last fights who really cares anymore.

That said I'll watch may weather v cotto

I'd rather see him fight canello alvarez but cotto would be a good fight. I just want to see some one hand mayweather his ass. I remember when he made the statement about mma fighters. " they are the guys who couldn't make it in boxing" of course everyone wanted to fight him but the mma paydays aren't big enough yet and we know he'd get his ass handed to him in the UFC

Really the only thing that they're hurting is the sport of boxing. It's already falling off the radar, and this would be one of the few fights that would bring in some new people. MMA is the new boxing.

yah, just an aging sport. Its where the big $$ is still though, a lot of boxing mentality and other things is rubbing off in mma though...

yah, when youre the "superior" fighter you shouldn't need to win that way.

Exactly, not that it was cheating; just a cheap shot I think. You spend all this time bragging about how bad ass you are and then you take advantage to end a fight like that? I am just waiting for someone to make his record 42-1

Mayweather will take this one. I dont like his cocky attitude but he is, by far, the better fighter.

Even though most people made a big deal about his performance against Margarito, Cotto showed little.

Canelo or even Martinez would have been a better oponent, IMO.

Mayweather only picks opponents that have flaws or that he feels are "beatable"...I think they (the fans/boxing exec's) should pick which fighter fightes whom to make it more far.

Of course I am going to pick the guy I can beat...who wouldnt

Manny Pacquiao is scared to fight Mayweather. He has been running for a long time. They were suppose to fight 2 1/2 years ago. His camp said no then and their still running. Its always and excuse, not one time have you heard Pacquiao say that He wants to fight Mayweather. If this guy keeps calling me out we gonna fight, win or lose, I'm not gonna run from a fight. Put up or shut up, and Pacquiao is like a hoe in Church don't have shit to say...
