What makes you think they release him? I don't think Hamilton is going anywhere as long as he stays healthy this year.

Good. Way too much money and length of contract.

He is getting up there in age and he does have a lot of injuries. Prince has been in this league for 6-7 years and avg 158 games per year (yes I heard this stat on the radio). Seems like Prince would had been a great to pick up and let go of a player that miss half the season every other season. And yes I am a big Hamilton fan but damn what good is he when he is hurt all the time.

You misunderstand the value of the positions a player can play. Prince is below average defensively at first base. Hamilton is one of the top defensive outfielders in the league. Fielder will be a DH in 3-4 seasons if not sooner. Josh still has 3-4 years in his prime before he begins a downturn. He's worth the money -- Fielder isn't. In fact, you could argue that Fielder may not even be top 3 (or 5) at his position for that matter. That isn't a question with Hamilton. If you wonder why Fielder isn't missing games, go try to find highlights of him giving up his body to make a play. The only thing he gives up his body for is Golden Corral.

But are you willing to pay Hamilton big money next year though? It doesn't matter now cause Prince is a Tiger now. But I truly thought Prince would be a better option for Hamilton's replacement. But hey I hope I'm wrong and Hamilton can stay healthy, cause you are right if he does, he still has 3-5 years of great baseball in him.

I think Hamilton's downturn starts in the next year or two, if it hasn't already started.

I'm in the same boat, as 2000GT. I don't think Hamilton will be here that much longer, I "wish" we could have signed Prince but that's too much to invest in him especially for 9 years.

I agree Prince would had been a nice pick up but not for that much money and 9 years.

They won't pay Hamilton 23+ million a year. I'm guessing he'll be more in the 15-17 per tops. Yes, I'd go 5/75-80 for Hambone. If you look at all the tools, he's better than Fielder in defense (glove and arm), baserunning, hitting for power, hitting for average, and is clutch. To try and replace Hamilton with Fielder is simply idiotic.

                        Power: Hamilton - 25 HR, .536 slugging; Fielder - 38 HR, .566 slugging
                        Average: Hamilton - .298 BA, .356 OBP; Fielder - .299 BA, .415 OBP
Clutch: Hamilton - 89 RBI (.74 per game played), Fielder - 121 RBI (.75 per game played)

Why is everyone treating Fielder and Hamilton as some intertwined, mutually dependent transaction?

Because the consensus was the Rangers couldn't afford both. And looking at what Detroit is paying him, I agree.

You idiots never cease to amaze me. You're going to talk long term contracts and use 1 year to make a comparison. Try again.

                              Hamilton Career:

                              589 GP 2263 AB 368 R 698 H 118 HR 425 RBI 203 BB 458 SO .308 avg

                              Fielder Career:

                              998 GP 3527 AB 571 R 996 H 230 HR 656 RBI 566 BB 779 SO .282 avg

                              Hamilton per AB:

                              .052 HR .290 RBI .090 BB .202 SO

                              Fielder per AB:

                              .065 HR .184 RBI .160 BB .221 SO

Josh has 5 seasons under his belt. He hit over .300 twice, hit .290's twice (including .298) and .268 in his other season. Prince 6 full seasons. He's hit .300 never (.299 twice). I don't think there's even a discussion about how they compare defensively and base running. There's no question Hamilton is the better player, and he'll be a better value than 23 mil per for 9 years.

I'm not talking long-term because neither of them should get a long-term contract.
