The bottom line is his defense hasn't been the same since Mike left. They finished Top 10 once in the years after Mike went to AU and the others he averaged in the 50's.
One of the best recruiters OU had and a really good LB coach. He'll be missed but bringing back Mike has helped......I was hoping for the Co-Defensive thing again.......2000 MNC under that duo.
You'll hear the decline of the OU defense being blamed on better pass-happy offenses in the Big 12 now versus when Mike was here from 1999-2003. But the fact is, here are the worst scoring defense performances under Mike:
1999 - gave up 38 points three times (Texas, @COL, @TECH)
2000 - gave up 31 points twice (@KSU, @A&M)
2001 - gave up 37 once (KSU)
2002 - gave up 38 once (@OSU)
2003 - gave up 35 once (KSU @KC)
In bowl games, OU defense gave up 27 to Ole Miss, 2 to FSU, 3 to Arkansas, and 14 points to Washington St. under Mike.
Since he left, OU has given up a 40+ game EVERY year.
2004 - 55 (USC) - BCS bowl
2005 - 41 (@UCLA) and 45 (Texas)
2006 - 43 (Boise) - BCS bowl
2007 - 48 (West Va.) - BCS bowl
2008 - 45 (Texas) and 41 (@OSU)
2009 - 41 (@TECH)
2010 - 41 (@OSU)
2011 - 41 (TECH) and 45 (@BAY) and 44 (@OSU)
Without Mike, OU gave up 21 to LSU, 55 to USC, 14 to Oregon, 43 to Boise, 48 to West Virginia, 24 to Florida, 27 to Stanford, 20 to Connecticut, and 14 to Iowa in bowl games.
I think most would agree that it's the 40+ point meltdowns that frustrates Sooner fans the most. Largely because they did not occur on Mike's watch and happened every year since he left.
The question is, was it Mike or the Mike / Brent combination that was so effective from 1999-2003? We shall see.
