It'd have been nice to have him in the Rangers lineup, but I'm not a fan of these ultra long/high dollar contracts. I think we have enough offense without him.
That's like $23.5 mil a year? If he's anything like his old man, he'll weigh 400lbs at the end of that 9 year deal.

    • Yeah, no thanks with that contract, Boras.

We can now re-sign Josh after this season though.

      • Rangers schedule to meet with Roy Oswalt today. It's nice to see the Rangers attempting to stockpile talented pitching. We're pretty solid on offense, so I think this is where the focus should be.

Unless he signs for a small amount of money over 2 years (or 1), this should be a no-no. The rotation is already full, so adding a guy on the back end of his career is a waste of dollars spent elsewhere if you ask me. I have no idea how much he's looking for though.

          • Keep going after old fuckers with the baggage of health issues, Jon Daniels. You seem to be trying to undo a lot of the good you've done.

            • The only good that i could see coming from an Oswalt signing would him being a part time rotation guy and mentor to the young pitchers. Between pitching more often and the summer heat, I think Darvish/Feliz(not necessarily the heat for Feliz) are going to need some breaks down the stretch. And Roy could spot start and be effective. I wouldn't break the bank for him and if there was a 2nd year - it would be a club option.

              • I think the Rangers will only go for this if the money is low. I have a feeling that Oswalt is going to end up with the Cards.

                  • At times, I have been critical of Warsh, but I didn't know that the Ranger's record has improved every year he has managed. It's the first time in modern baseball history, according to a sports talk show I heard today.

Rangers gonna have to do a heckuva job this year to improve again. 96 wins last year...

Granted, Warsh has got us to the series 2 years in a row, I think the Rangers record would be better with another manager. I can't stand how he manages the pitching staff. Can't argue with the results, but it doesn't mean I have to like/agree with his decisions.

His decision making process is often suspect, but I don't think you can overstate how much the players seem to enjoy playing for him and I think that has a lot to do with their success.

Suspect is putting it nicely. The players are all maturing, and he just happened to be right here at just the right time. As much as they enjoy playing for Wash, they would have enjoyed 2 WS rings more.

                          • The St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers are pursuing Roy Oswalt, but the Baltimore Orioles ultimately could decide where the free-agent righthander lands.

In order to fit Oswalt into their 2012 payroll, the Cardinals likely will have to shed some salary. In an effort to do so, they have been shopping righthander Kyle McClellan to the Orioles. However, The Baltimore Sun reports the Cardinals’ asking price is too high.

The Rangers aren’t believed to be dealing with quite as tight a budget, but they also have had trade discussions with the Orioles about reliever Koji Uehara. Uehara was dealt from Baltimore to Texas before last season’s nonwaiver trading deadline, but the Rangers would like to unload him and his $4 million salary. The Baltimore Sun reports the Orioles also have balked at the asking price in trade talks with the Rangers.

The Rangers met Monday with Oswalt, who has had an ongoing dialogue with the Cardinals. He is believed to be seeking a one-year contract worth $10 million, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Oswalt, 34, went 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA in 23 starts for the Philadelphia Phillies last season, but he missed about six weeks because of a back injury. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Rangers have concerns about Oswalt’s durability as well as his motivation to pitch for them.

This strikes me as funny. They didn't sign Pujols to a monster contract...therefore they should be flush with cash.

You're assuming that they had a ton of cash to spend on him. I think they were somewhat relieved when Anaheim jumped out and flexed their wallet.
