  • If that is as good as UT is, they will get beat by the entire Big 12 South.

    • I'll say it, Texas sucked today. And if they play like this next week they will be out of the top 25.

            • Does the coachhing staff think Ash is that better than Little Colt?

The only thing i'll bash is OU defensive line, they come to play every other series.

                    • Checking in. That was horrible. Texas will get smashed the rest of the way if they don't improve A.S.A.P. This week won't be pretty vs OSU, either.

                      • GARLAND, Texas -- As Texas and Oklahoma get ready for their annual Red River Rivalry clash at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Desmond Mapps puts in work of his own. Never mind that his team, Garland High, has a bye week; there's no rest for the 2013 defensive back.

Mapps finishes up speed drills and cutting drills, simulating patterns and routes he may see from an opponent. When he's not on the field, he's performing strength and conditioning exercises in the weight room. Mapps doesn't have any offers as a junior, but his constant working gives off the notion that he's juggling 15 or 20.

While putting in the time, Mapps wears the typical T-shirt and gym shorts. Always within reach is an Oklahoma Sooners lanyard, most of the time displayed around his neck. Not so questionable for the average recruit, right?

But then again, Mapps isn't the average recruit.

Mapps, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound free safety, is the younger stepbrother of Marquise Goodwin. Yes, that Marquise Goodwin, No. 84 for the Texas Longhorns. The receiver/punt returner who has made his athletic reputation as a world-class long jumper and triple jumper in track and field.

Desmond Mapps' brother might play at Texas, but that doesn't stop the junior DB from liking Oklahoma.
The same Marquise Goodwin who wears burnt orange proudly and despises anything remotely associated with Oklahoma.

"It's nothing big. I just like Oklahoma," a very humble Mapps said. "I like the tradition there."

Insubordination? Outright defiance? Not hardly once you get to know Mapps. Unlike many who, after choosing sides, build a love-hate relationship with a team and its nemesis, Mapps is keeping a level head and is weighing all his college options. While he'll be rooting for his brother to shine, he'll also be watching how both teams look.

Oklahoma has been showing interest and is one of his early options. Ironically, at this point, Texas isn't -- and it's not because he isn't interested. Mapps said he has yet to receive any correspondence from the Longhorns. Perhaps that will change if Mapps continues to be the ball-hawking defender he is. Mapps was the defensive sophomore of the year in his district last season, recording 28 tackles and four interceptions.

This year, Mapps has yet to record a pick, partly because teams have steered away from throwing at him. With great instincts and blazing speed (Mapps possesses high 4.3 speed in the 40-yard dash), Mapps has shown a great ability to cover the deep ball and make game-changing and game-saving plays in the secondary.

"That's the thing that jumps out with Des is his speed. He can fly," Garland coach Jeff Jordan said. "He was one of our 4x1 and 4x2 [sprinters] who qualified for regionals, and his sister [Quetta Mapps] was on the girls' team that finished second in state. Then there's Marquise. You can tell speed is in the genes."

Jordan said Mapps is one of the fastest players he has coached at Garland. He's also one of the most determined to master multiple positions. Mapps, in addition to playing safety, has seen time at receiver and on special teams. He also has lined up at cornerback on rare occasions. Jordan said Mapps most likely will play cornerback in college.

Mapps said he understands that he's a Longhorns legacy in many ways, but he is entertaining interest from TCU, SMU, Notre Dame, Arizona and Central Arkansas, in addition to Oklahoma. If Texas expresses interest, he'll add it to the mix. In fact, Mapps said an offer from Texas would be hard to turn down.

"We've had some guys from here who went on to play at Texas," Mapps said, referring to UT sophomore cornerback Adrian Phillips and freshman linebacker Tevin Jackson. "I wouldn't mind continuing that tradition of guys from Garland High."

Mapps said he will not be at Saturday's game, but he'll be paying attention to Texas and Oklahoma and their styles of play. He'll especially keep an eye on his brother.

"When he came back to football, that's surprised me," Mapps said of Goodwin, who once had focused his attention to track." I know how much he loves track. Ryan [Broyles] is my favorite receiver, but in track [Goodwin] in my favorite.

"The Texas-OU game to me is kind of like our high school game against South Garland. It's a big deal, and nobody wants to take an L. If I would have gone to the game, I wouldn't have had an Oklahoma or Texas shirt on. I really do like both of the schools. I probably would have just worn a Garland shirt."

Jordan said Mapps has the potential of not only wearing one of their jerseys in the future but also being an all-conference defensive back.

"I think the sky's the limit," Jordan said. "He's got all the athletic ability in the world, and he's gaining in the knowledge and the understanding of the game. Plus, he's a great kid and a hard worker. He's very humble and just goes out and takes care of his business."

                        So who wins on Saturday?

"Both teams are undefeated, so I don't know," Mapps said. "I want to see my brother do well, but I like both teams. I expect a lot of excitement from the players, and I expect big plays to be made on both sides of the ball."
