(AP) -- Mike Modano is retiring after 21 seasons in the NHL.

Modano, in a phone interview Wednesday from Dallas, said he recently declined a chance to continue his career with the Vancouver Canucks.

He has 561 goals and 1,374 points, leading U.S.-born players in the league, over 20 seasons with the Dallas-Minnesota franchise and one season with his hometown Detroit Red Wings. The North Stars selected the native of Livonia, Mich., No. 1 overall in 1988. Following the franchise's move to Dallas, he helped the Stars hoist the Stanley Cup in 1999.

Modano signed with the Red Wings last year. A skate sliced a tendon in his right wrist, limiting him to 40 games and career lows with four goals and 15 points.

He is from the Detroit area, that's why he went to play in Detroit. I don't really think it had as much to do with a ring as it did with playing "at home".

The man is a bit of a legend and I don't care much for the last 5 years of Modano. However, I did think he was a great player when I started watching hockey and can't deny that I'm more of a fan than a hater of Modano.

Just seemed to fizzle and a get a little - passive the last several years.

Still, I think it's a smart move for him to retire at this point. He has his health and has to be loaded - time to enjoy it.

either way he had a fantastic career. I know I used to pick him in the top 5 when I'd build a fantasy team in Sega Genesis NHL 97. LOL

Really? So you think just because the Pos gm wanted to get rid of him and he didn't want to stop playing that he should have just gave in and retired? I will always have a ton of respect for Mike. I have met him many times, he is a great guy. Dallas is now his home and he will always be a star.

I will agree with you on this satement... He finished his playing career in Detroit but will be a Star again if not this year next...
