This Dave Brown fellow who spoke of following Gray (a well known Texas verbal commit) is an employee of ESPN, not of UT. He is also not an alum or had any affiliations with UT prior to his appointment to VP of programming for the LHN. He is a business man (not a UT alum/fan boy) thinking what the LHN viewership would most like to see. Naturally a majority of the viewship will be Longhorns fans so they want to see likely Texas recruits. I would venture to guess that D. Brown would have taken back what he said if he could but he cant. Regardless, the concern of a potential recruiting advantage was going to be revealed. Brown just made it easy with his comments for the naysayers to latch on. If you fast forward to today, the LHN is not showing and high school games, at least I havent seen any.
No they never did, because two weeks before it launched the NCAA ruled against it.

Texas A&M and other Big 12 members earned a victory against the Longhorn Network when the NCAA ruled Thursday that the televising of high school games on school or conference networks would be illegal.

"Last week, I joined with my fellow members of the Big 12 Board of Directors in strongly requesting that the NCAA Board of Directors issue a moratorium regarding the broadcast of high school content on institutional media platforms," A&M president Bowen Loftin said in a statement. "We are pleased that the NCAA addressed this issue quickly. This is a decision that we believe is in the best interests of prospective student-athletes, as well as the entire NCAA membership."

The Big 12 athletic directors had previously voted to prohibit for one year the broadcast of any high school sporting events on the Longhorn Network, which is set to launch Aug. 26.

for now, if the LHN makes it long enough, eventually High School games will be on there. And i'm not saying that because i want to see just Texas recruits. I'm saying it because i believe football fans like seeing good HS football and the best is here in Texas

I watch local HS ball on FSN every Friday night. I don't see a problem.

          Nope, it never will happen.

The NCAA already ruled that it was a recruiting violation.

Fox Sports nor the regular ESPN channels, local affiliates, etc are not Conference or Team only channels.

I think it's a major problem for recruiting. Just imagine. "hey if you go ahead and give us your verbal commitment, we'll make sure we cover some of your highschool games on our channel and get you some major publicity"

Totally agree. As a Longhorn fan, (that just happens to have Fios, lucked out there) I am enjoying the shit out of the LHN and but am glad the HS games are not being shown. Just the wrong place for them.

What are they charging you a month for LHN?

Nuttin. Its not even part of a sports tier. Just part of their basic 'extended cable' offering.

I'm heading out for lunch, but saw this posted. As a college football fan, I think the concept of being able to watch a bunch of HS games and future collegiate athletes on TV is pretty awesome. I have no doubt that even if it was used as a recruiting tool for UT, that doesn't guarantee that all the players that commit with UT will sign with UT or even end up being any good (see: Brantley, Perriloux etc.).

I just typed out a long paragraph about how I thought it was a bad idea and an unfair recruiting tool, but then I re-read it and I'm not so sure. Just a few points to consider:

UT promises a kid that they'll get some airtime if they commit. That doesn't mean that the kid won't change his mind, or just use UT to get his school some exposure. If he's that good, other schools are already scouting him in person, too. It's not like getting his footage played will alert other coaches, and it actually makes it EASIER on other schools to have complete game footage of a high profile recruit. Why on earth would a kid commit to a school just because his HIGH SCHOOL footage is getting some airplay. Kids don't commit for incentives on what they're going to get "in the past," (HS footage does nothing for his college career), they commit for incentives for the future. Whether that's booster money, a job at Big Red Autos, the prestige of the program, the chance to play for a certain coach, etc. depends on the school they're seeking. So to solve that, Texas would probably only offer airtime to a kid that has signed with them. At that point, it's baseless to say that is a recruiting advantage since they've already signed. Again, a game or two on the LHN (which no one gets currently, lol) isn't really a worthwhile incentive for a kid to sign with UT. I'm pretty sure Bob Stoops could make an 18-yr old kid see that it does nothing for them to have a HS game televised.

That's just one train of thought I had, the other one bailed on me. I'm too damn hungry to keep posting. A plate of fajita enchiladas is calling my name!

I wouldn't say never. Even though the ncaa ruled it illegal, the way they worded it made it sound temporary. The more schools that start getting there own network(OU is working on theirs right now) the more likely High School games will get shown.

Just remember, this would all be a moot point if Byrne would've just said "ok, let's try the Lonestar Network out". But nooooooooooooooooo, now we have to here aggy everywhere bitching and moaning (even with them leaving they still bitch and moan)

The only one that i heard would charge would be DirecTv. Of course that's if they ever pick it up.

No, the Big 12 put a one year limit on it until it could be reviewed by the NCAA. The NCAA's official statement was that under current rules it was a violation. So unless the NCAA changes their rules, I don't see it happening, and getting everyone to agree in the NCAA is a joke anyway

In a conference call following a meeting of the NCAA board of directors, NCAA president Mark Emmert said the governing body's staff had concluded that televising events involving high school athletes was impermissible under existing NCAA bylaws.

Though not unexpected — Big 12 athletic directors unanimously agreed Aug. 1 on a minimum one-year moratorium on such telecasts — the NCAA ruling means the Longhorn Network can't carry high school football games like it had planned.

I was under the impression that it was going to be a PPV based network, I guess that changed, or it's free for this season?

Well looks like the big news is Texas and OU have been authorized to formally apply to the Pac-12. And their move includes deals with Ok St. and Texas Tech as well. They haven't notified the Big 12 yet, and said remaining there is still on the table. But this could be the big news everyone was waiting on.

The University of Oklahoma's board of regents granted school president David Boren the authority to take action regarding conference realignment on Monday.
