Numbers don't tell the whole story though. Those Celtics teams would wipe the floor with the mavs of the 90's. Bird had way more talent around him the Dirk ever did.

I don't think anyone here is making statistical comparisons, but more of a clutch player making all the right moves at the right time. Just like Bird used to do. I know enough of BB and back in the day when all we had was Bird vs Magic and it seemed like Dirk was making Bird like moves. And even Magic himself said last night (post game) that hes Bird like...

Not at all. he was the shit in his day. Just saying he was able to do some of his stuff because of the heat being taken off of him while dealing with other players on those teams.

Seriously, Dirk has had Nash(pre MVP level), Finley, Jason Terry, and that is it. Nash may be a hall of famer but he wasn't at the time of him being with Dallas. Bird had Mchale, Parrish, and I think Johnson.

I am just saying the talent levels of their teammates really play into how the achievements of Bird and Nowitzki differ.

I think Dirk is great, and MVP material this year, but let's pull in the reins a little.

For the record, I said I thought the Mavs would win last night, but NOT the way they did it! Outstanding job.

I'm old enough and have been a fan of the NBA long enough to have seen Bird play. Dude was impressive as hell. He also had McHale and Parrish to help. Dirk makes everyone else around him better, but what he does on his own sometimes...is otherwordly. I'm not knocking Bird at all, but Dirk is a notch above in my book.

That's what sports fans do, they make comparisons to the greats. Nobody is taking anything away from LB.

I disagree with the Kobe Dirk reference. Kobe can't hang anymore. 3-4 years ago, sure. But right now, Dirk is among the top 3 playing in the NBA currently. Some would put him at #1, some wouldn't. But he is top 3, and that's not deniable.

Take away rings, All Star appearance (isn't Dirk right there with being selected?) and MVP's (biased IMO and based on how the team has performed), whatever. Can someone compare individual performance stats between the two and I bet they are a lot closer than you think. I'm off to Google now.

I'm still waiting on your "google", and I know why...it won't help your case at all. I'm a Mav's fan, but I'm not blind. This is an age-old argument, no matter the sport. The "athlete of the moment" will win it, because it's "out of sight, out of mind". Bird had 47 games of 40 points or more, and 5 games with 50 or more points. More rebounds per game, more points per game, and about 3X the assists' per game.
