  • Gonna brag on my son...

We had a difference of opinion on the direction the team was going as far as player development was concerned so we moved to a new team 10days ago. He was the best pitcher on the team so naturally the coach was pissed at me...to top it off, his short stop left at the same time due to the same reasons. So Colby's old team and his new team faced off this weekend since we were the 1 seed and they were the 8 seed. Colby came in and shut them down on the mound. He gave up one hit that was a little blooper over the 3rd baseman that should have been caught. We were very proud of his composure as I am sure that he was very nervous playing against his friends on the old team. The best part is he hit a 3 run shot deep over the CF fence. CF was 225ft and this ball went at least 30ft over it in the air. I dont think the boy's feet touched the ground as he rounded the bases! That was a great thing to watch.

We came up against one of the best teams in the state (and maybe country since they qualified for the Elite 32 tournament in Orlando) in the championship game and got down 7 runs and ended up losing 7-3. Colby pitched the last inning in relief and shut them down...one of the coaches clocked his fast ball at 60mph! Pretty damn fast for a 9yr old! But, he is as big as most 12yr olds at just under 5'2 and 135lbs.

Very cool. That's a strong pitch for a young guy like himself. Hope he stays with it.

My kid likes his hair shaggy too. So we compromised, and he has a mohawk instead.

Daddy ball started to affect the team. When you are starting kids at pitcher on Sunday because they are yours rather than the kid that gives you the best chance to win, it's a problem.

Thanks. Colby has come a long way and his drive and determination will take him far in the sport.

He got a mohawk for the world series last year with his teammates...it was hilarious.

That was Kenny's first mohawk as well. When they started the road to State, I gave him a Liddell style mohawk. He actually didn't cut his hair again until I told him I was tired of looking at it. He didn't want to cut it, asked if he could have another mohawk, so I let him. This time it's a real mohawk, ThreeFingerPete style.

I don't think coaches with kids should be allowed to be on the same team, you did the right thing Dave. Congrats to your boy, now cut his damn hair! I told my son he can cut his hair anyway he wants...when he starts paying for it...

Baseball is one sport I never played as a kid and now wished that I would have. Unfortunately I never really even cared for the sport until five years ago or so. Glad lil dave is doing well! Maybe we'll see him in a rangers uniform in a decade or so!

Thanks. I just want him to make it on some starting HS roster. If he takes it further than that, then that will be great.

I played from age 7 through HS and actually had several scholarship offers but since I joined the Army my 11th grade year, I couldnt take them.

Glad he got a piece of that game and did so well, he seemed pretty psyched about pitching!

Keep him throwing heat, that'll save his shoulder/elbow for later.

When did he start playing? (age)

With that kind of a size advantage, he shouldn't have any problem making it onto a HS roster, even if the other kids catch up. That said, make sure he doesn't become reliant on throwing it by kids. It's good that you've found him a more competitive team and atmosphere that suits him, but don't rule out private lessons once he gets a little older; they bring a lot more to the table that a kid just can't get in any practice, no matter what level they play at.

I was not so fortunate on the size end. I was always 1+ year younger than everyone I played with and was very average for my age to begin with, so I had to be a little craftier. I wound up pitching through my freshman season and one season of JV (only topping out at a little over 65 on a good day) before I was forced to concede my hand on the mound.

He has a good 4 seam, 2 seam, change up and cutter. He played tee ball as a 5yr old and machine pitch as a 6yr old. He then took a year and a half off to race MX full time. He got too big for the bikes at his level so he went back to baseball as an 8yr old. He has been back playing just over a year. He has come a long way.

He gets private lessons 4hrs per week. Helps a ton. He and I also spend several hours a week at the field and cages. He cant get enough...if I cannot work with him he goes and throws a tennis ball against the house.
