  • Cable vs direct/dish

I haven't seen a thread like this in a while. I've been a happy Direct TV customer for years but my DVR is acting stupid now and after sitting on hold for 20 minutes without ever getting an answer I'm pissed with them now. I really want their whole home DVR system but they want $199 to upgrade me with another 2 year contract (mine is up). They also still don't have G4TV.

On the other hand Dish is a good $20 cheaper per month for similar programming. They are also incorporating Google TV with their DVRs, for now it's still in it's infancy and you need the seperate box for $179 (normally $299 from Logitech). I like the idea of using my droid as a remote. They also have sling in their top of the line box, but for the price you can buy the hardware cheaper and add it to any set top box.

My other option is Charter cable. I haven't used it in years but picture quality was always suspect, especially on the higher number channels. Since they killed the analog service though I know they've ramped up bandwidth considerably. I'd imagine they've caught up with satellite for picture quality now. I'm happy with Netflix's streaming through Charter internet at least, surely their TV is as good.

Uverse and FIOS aren't an option, they aren't offered yet in my area.

Just trying to get opinions. The easy option is to get the DVR replaced or repair it myself (the hard drive is toast, you can just plug an eSATA drive in and it ignores the internal one). I already called Direct and bitched about the price last month and got a $60 credit and $20 off for 6 months. They won't budge on equipment ugrades though. My box is a HR20-700, it's still current in their system. Any chance they'd send a HR24 as the replacement anyways?

I've been a Dish customer for ten years now and have always been very happy with them other than their little pissing contest with Fox last year. Even at that, it wasn't enough to make me leave as there wasn't a better option.
Their DVR's are top notch. I had my HD DVR for five years and it started to lock up every once in a while due to my letting it get way too hot, too many times. After installing a cooling fan system in the cabinet the dvr is in like I should have had in place from the beginning, I called them and told them it was locking up and got a new replacement, no questions asked.
My remotes got old and I found out they had new ones, so I called and asked for new ones and got them, no questions asked.
The programming is great and the program guide is the most user-friendly I've seen.

I voted DISH. Had it for almost 4 years now. About a 99% uptime. No problems. Works in the rain or cloudy days. Only have problems with heavy snow accumulation. I have the America Top 200 plan w/HD & local channels. Best DVR I've had from any cable provider. 300 hour capacity on SD and 50+ hours on HD content storage. Now they have DISH Cinema with 1080p content and there are quite of bit of movies that are free, which is redundant for me as I wear the hell out of my Netflix streaming account. And they never screw up my bill, which is one of the several reasons I left Verizon.

        Call and ask for cancellations.

When they ask you why you're cancelling, tell them you want to move to Dish Network because they are giving you a better DVR for free.

DTV will still want a contract but you'll most likely get a free DVR out of the deal...

To me, Dish and DTV are interchangeable in all respects but one, and that is NFL Sunday Ticket. Outside of that they have their pros and cons but I consider them both to be generally pretty good.

However, Charter is shit. Going with them would be a mistake.

Already have DVR, already called and got my retention offer.

Dish definitely is winning in the technology department right now. They have a tuner with integrated sling functions and they offer googletv on the other DVRs (added cost peripheral but it's discounted heavily through Dish). Sure you can add either option to Direct TV externally but it's $299 or $249 on top of their DVR box fee, Dish adds in it and advertises it as one of their features.

Direct TV has the MRV setup, which is pretty cool but realistically sling's system accomplishes the same thing, but from anywhere, not just on the same network.

Right now I'm leaning towards Dish with the 922 box, heck I think I'm basically sold on it. It comes with a terabyte drive and has sling HD integrated, the sling system is $299 by itself so it's well worth the $199 asking price.

Cable has it's selling points. I can put a TV in every room and not have to pay for a receiver to get basic cable and I can use my PC as a DVR (for the basic channels). It never goes down and it's the cheapest of the 3 options, once you bundle it with the internet I already pay for. Charter's customer service and tech support suck ass though but at least I can drive to their local store front and trade equipment if it fails, no need to sit on hold for an hour and wait around all day for a tech to show up. Also no contract needed!

Thanks for the input. I just wish AT&T would quit being bitches and bring some Uverse to my city.

They both suck along with cable. I use a good attic antenna and pick up ALL of the local stations in full HD...for FREE. I don't need 300 channels that don't work in the rain.

If that statement was remotely true, then I would have dumped DISH years ago.
