Too late. Already have a fortune in Autometer. I really want to get this thing together and start driving it.

These days, $400 buys a solid head unit.

I had the Mach 460 in my 2004, which may differ some, but...

I replaced the head unit with aftermarket and all I needed for it to work was a wiring adapter from crutchfield.

But, once you add aftermarket speakers, your chances of being able to keep using the factory wiring and amps is pretty much nil. Factory amps aren't like aftermarket as far as application (ohms and whatnot, I'm sure someone with more expertise can explain why). At that point you just need to pull out all of the old shit and run new wiring.

BTW.. The convenience of Nav in the head unit is great, but I much prefer my stand alone Garmin. Free lifetime map updates and it is not tied to the car or stereo. I take it on trips to use in rental cars, etc.

I also have friends that have had the higher end head units with nav, and the nav was glitchy at best.

I use the turn-by-turn on my phone via bluetooth to my head unit.

But that only works if you have data coverage, right? Or at least cell service? I like being able to use the Garmin in areas with no cell service.

EW threw a nice little Alpine CD player in my '99 GT with Mach 460 and it all worked great. I'll always swear by Alpine. I've had probably about 8 of them and never had a problem(except 2 of them getting stolen). They've also got some cheaper models out now. I put one of those in my 4Runner and it worked great too.

So it does work with no service? I'm not trying to be a dumbass, I just have never used it, personally. If it does, rock on. It just didn't figure that the map data is all loaded in the phone, and has to pull that info down when you program the route.

Yes, GPS will work with no service. I spent the last week up in the rockies and had no service deep in the mountains but GPS worked great. You need to have your maps set to download to your phone so they'll work offline though.

This and Kenwood for me. I've always had some issue with Pioneer, Sony, JVC, Clarion etc.

Ive always had good luck with Kenwood, though I think the Alpine I have is far superior to any of the kenwoods I had.

Damn you! I am looking at the IQ3 now and seeing what gauges I can do without. I could sell enough of the Autometer stuff off to pay for most if not all of going Racepak IQ3.

If I did that, I might just keep the factory head units for the radio.
