  • Anyone use an Apple TV thingamabob?

I have not done one lick of research into the Apple TV thing, but we may get one for free, so WTH, might as well see what it's all about. Anyone use one? Does it only recieve content from a download source, like Netflix or Youtube, etc.???

Is it even worth having, I have FIOS with a bazillion channels already, no Netflix account.

    Any feedback/opimions welcome!

Netflix, You tube, MLB, and several others, plus you can access the Apple Store too. It also serves as a share point for your home pc files if you turn on Home Sharing, so you view pics or movies stored there as well. I really like mine.

I hardly use the iMAC for anything, mostly use my PC. I have a Verizon media manager app on the PC and can watch videos, photos, etc on the TV with that, but pretty rare I ever do that.

So is there any free TV content, or is it all pay-per-view type stuff? All channels, like I can watch shows from NBC, like the entire season of The Office, or whatever??

      Thanks!

Some free access, but not mainstream stuff. HuluPlus, typical Netflix free content, MLB, NBA and NHL stuff, but that's about it. I wanted access to my Apple store account on the tv, so I bought this. For what I use it for, it works well. You can also use Air Play to stream stuff from your iPhone or iPad.

Thanks for the info! I'll give it a whirl, for free I guess it can't be half bad!

it has a ton of crap on it. id have to ask Jr for any specifics. he is the only one in the house that knows how to use it. i think its cool you can show youtube vids from your phone and they will pop up on the tv.

            god bless.

I will say, Apple does integrate their devices seamlessly.

Got it tonight and hooked it up. My gawd, talk abut easy to setup/navigate! So far only watched a couple Youtube videos and listened to a podcast. Searched ABC for some shows and didn't find any free ones, LOL. I'll mess with it more this weekend, gotta hook it to my big TV in the living room so I can hear shit in the surround sound, not just the TV speakers on Lyn's TV. probably rent Zero Dark Thirty this weekend with it.

Keep us updated. I want to get rid of cable, and this has me curious.

I'm gonna research Hulu plus vs. Netflix, see what the advantages/disadvantages are. I doubt I'll ditch cable tho, need ESPN and NFL Network for football! Plus, I like to watch the current season of shit, not have to wait a year.

I've "heard" a Netflix account can be used on 4 devices at the same time, so perhaps someone you know can split the cost/account with you to test it out of you have a Netflix capable device already, or use the computer to test it???

PM me your number Brent, I'll text/send pic's of the Apple TV to ya as I mess around with it more if ya want. I'm telling you, it is as easy to navigate as an iPod with there remote, and has a bunch of choices.

Do you have any other Apple devices? Do you use iCliod if you do? I do not use iCloud at all, have 2 computers and Lyn has an iPhone.

Never had a AppleTV, but just recently picked up the new Roku 3. The interface is extremely fast and responsive. And there are more public and private channels than you would ever have time to watch. The Netflix, HBOGo, Crackle, Plex, and Hulu are more than plenty. Probably the best feature is the search feature that looks for specific content across all the channels automatically. And the Roku phone app has a feature that mimics Airplay.

Football isn't a big deal, as I usually watch the games at Jeremy's house, down the street. I have Netflix, but I want to look in to Hulu and Redbox Instant. I'm not sure what either of those cost, but my Netflix is under $10/month, and that's a hell of a lot better than the $100+ I'm paying for cable. I do have all the movie channels though. Keeping current with my shows is why I haven't cancelled cable yet. But I could torrent them, the day after they air, and upload them to iCloud. Or I should be able to anyways.

Yes. I have the iPhone, as well as an iPad I use for work. My son also has the iPhone. I like the idea of being able to stream my music through my surround sound, without having to buy a dock. Do you know if the apps are all applicable as well? Spotify, or pandora for instance? I use iCloud, but really only for pictures and backups. I still sync with my laptop everyone so often, because I don't totally trust iCloud yet. I haven't had an issue, but I don't want to find out the hard way.

I'm not sure about the app's, I don't have Pandora installed on anything, but I can bust out the old iPhone 3GS and install it and test it out. I'm still trying to figure out how it all works. Either it just knows all devices my apple ID have logged in on, or something freaky is happening, because my iMAC screen goes to iTunes and thru all the shit Apple TV is scrolling thru at the same time. I was like WTF is going on!???

I did jam to some iTunes music and some YouTube videos thru the surround sound, with lotsa bass!

Hmm, Google yielded this: saying yes you can...

                              Using Airplay with Pandora

If you are having trouble finding the Airplay button, keep in mind that the AirPlay button will only show when another source (Airport Express/Apple TV) is available on your current network. You can find the AirPlay button in a couple of different places:

If Pandora is actively playing but not the currently open window, double click the home button on the device. Swipe to the right along the area at the bottom to reveal the music player controls and Pandora icon. Tap the AirPlay button (to the right of the forward button) and select the other source you want to stream to.

If Pandora is the active window on your device, then you can slide up the volume bar by tapping and moving up the three lines that you see near the bottom of the screen (they are located between the thumb up and the pause/play button). You should then see the Airplay button to the right of the volume bar. Tapping on this button will also allow you select the other source that you would like to stream to.
