  • Sound delay

Ok so I went to my grandparents house to hook up their new HDtv. After I got done I noticed that the sound is delayed on the surround sound system. The stereo receiver is a Onkyo unit 5.1 system. Has anyone ever had this problem before? I have the tv hooked up by an HDMI cord from the Dish box. The audio to the Onkyo unit is ran by RCA cables from the Dish box. Do I need to go get them a new stereo unit that can run HDMI cords, or is there something else I can do to correct the problem?

I would just get them a upgraded receiver. If they don't care about all the bells and whistles you can get one relatively cheap. Does the receiver have a fiber optic input?

No it doesn't, I think I'm just gonna have to get them a newer model.

It must be an old Onkyo. And having the audio connected via RCA you're just getting 2 channel stereo in the first place. Not utilizing multichannel soundtracks, unless you have it hooked up optical or digital coax for lossy 5.1 that you can get from some of your DISH HD channels. Otherwise, the Onkyo may be converting to Pro Logic being connected RCA. However, I'm not sure what model you have, but most of the Onkyo AVRs for the last few years have the ability in the settings menu to adjust the audio delay from a source, which usually an issue over HDMI or when they are paired up with certain Blu-ray players. It's also possible it could have been a glitch with DISH.

All of mine do. However, I just let the Audyssey feature set the delay for my 5.1 set up as it's based on the distance of the speaker to the listening position.

Next time you have the audio delay, try switching channels on the DISH receiver.

Nothing much to say that Mustangman didn't touch on. Running both The digital video in conjunction with the analog audio can cause audio delay, that usually most receivers have an adjustment for.
