Brent, you should be able to work around it. That's what I did. Just run HDMI directly from your sources to your TV (for video). Then run optical (or digital coax) from the sources to the receiver (for audio). Then you'll just have to select your input for the TV and the receiver (instead of just the receiver) whenever you change sources.

What type of cables are you guys using that are having problems with the Onkyo? And what is your HDMI Monitor Out setting? It defaults to 'Auto' in the Onkyo. Change it from 'Auto' to 'Through' and leave Deep Color set to 'Auto' on all devices. I've yet to have a single Handshake issue using 6ft. Mediabridge Ultra 1.4 ARC w/Ethernet HDMI cables. I have a Roku 3, Panny Bluray player, & FIOS DVR for my HDMI input devices. The TV is a Panny Plasma. This is on a 609 and 818 model.
These are the cables I'm using for all devices. http://www.mediabridgeproducts.com/s...Foot-138p6.htm

To answer your question, I've used cheap cables and fancy cables, usually 4', never more than 6'. I've tried every setting and trick out there. The Onkyos I had would work perfect for a while, then they started acting up every now and then, and then they got to where you had to wait forever or plug and unplug shit, turn things on and off, etc. Then they just got to where they wouldn't work at all, regardless of source, settings, cables, etc. Slide a different receiver in its place (in my case, a Yamaha), and everything works exactly like it should. Same sources, same cables, same settings. No issues.
All this is coming from a guy who used to really like Onkyo. I had 3 in my home at one point. I just don't see those kind of widespread, consistent complaints for a lot of other brands. If you look at the big picture here, outside of just your own experience, it would be pretty irresponsible to recommend Onkyo to anyone.

But just because you don't have the problems with yours doesn't mean that the tons of people who have are doing something wrong.

I actually would recommend any of the upper end Onkyo receivers with Audyssey MultEQ XT32. As they simply sound excellent with great imaging.
However, you're right...In the $500 range, I would recommend a Denon 1912/1913 over most others at this point.

I haven't done a ton of research on this particular issue, but is there a known hardware fix for it and you just need someone to actually fix it?Originally posted by BradMBut, just like condoms and women's rights, I don't believe in them.Originally posted by LeahIn other news: Brent's meat melts in your mouth.

But at the end of the day, I'm with you on wanting the receiver to do everything it's supposed to do without compromise. I just wouldn't trash it or put more money into fixing it. Should be fine for a second room.

I've had Yamaha, HK, and Sony(Currently have STR-DH710). I'm looking for a receiver that has some power to push my speakers. I have TSI 500's, CS20 for center, and TSI-200's for surrounds."No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
