opinions on CB radios...

Something I have always been interested in having is a cb radio. I know nothing about them and am looking for a suggestion. I found this one that looks cool, is it worth a fuck?

Cobra is pretty solid, usually.

I used to play with them 10-15 years ago, and had some friends that were into them. Its been a while, but back then, there wasn't much on the web as far as mods and tricks. If you found a good CB shop, you could get a clear talker that had a huge range. For just running up and down the highway, or car to car, they all work. The extra features and "tuneability" on the inside was what made one more preferable than another.

Thats a good radio. Can easily tune that one up a few more watts. So... you going with a whip antenna.

Dunno what the hell I am doing so I need a little assistance picking parts out. I do however like tinkering with shit so if I can mod this thing to be a beast show me how.

Beast? Lol. Not without a booster and they are not legal. I think FCC allows for 4 watts and that radio is probably set to about 3. But it can easily be adjusted to 6 with no problems. Have a CB tech do it for you. In fact the whole install.

As far as a antanna? We use to use long ass whips connected to the back bumper. Makes for a good ground. Also note that 50% of it needs to be above the top of the vehicle.

Mics? A noise canceling power mic would be great. I often used a desk top base mic in my ride called the D-104 with a 75 watt kicker under the seat.

But like I said. Its been a long time. There are probably all kinds of new toys out there today. I think Bonnie and Clides is still open off 360. Go in and ask them for a tour.

Yeah, but not by a tech. They will only push the limit by a few watts to stay out of trouble. A good tune on that LX will turn about 20/25 watts. Problem is finding someone that will do it. Need to find a Mom and Pop shop. Winchester use to do all my work out of Irving in the early 90's. But he is long gone.

I'm not sure if my guy is even around, but they weren't too far from cedar creek.
Just about any truck stop that has a CB shop around will do it without issue. It's what they do.
I'd bet that most of it is on the net and available to anyone now...

I have this one mounted above my rear view mirror on a mount I made. I really like it because it has the built in SWR meter, and weather alerts. Whenever the Jeep is on, it'll kick on if a weather alert is issued. Scares the shit out of me, but it has actually saved me from driving towards a terrible tornado way down the road, and a flash flood (the sky was clear) when I was riverbed wheeling with some friends. Ten minutes later and my Jeep would have been washed away. There was a really bad storm miles north.

Jesus, I did not think there was anybody running CBs anymore. I took mine out a few years ago due to the parking garages in Dallas area...etc and the antennae. Plus, not a whole lot of useful traffic that I noticed.

Is there a good shop in the N. Dallas area? Only place I've seen one is on 20 ...on the way to/from Tyler I think.

We use CB's out on the trail all the time. Sometimes we get groups of a couple hundred out there, its really nice for getting everyone rounded up for lunch or issuing tips on trail conditions, etc..
