amazon has a harman kardon AVR 3600 for $499. it's a bit outdated in terms of some new features like hdmi 1.4 and ARC but that's what i would get since it is about the best sound quality you can get for the money. that's just the receiver though, you would still need speakers

beyond that i would be making a big jump to a pioneer elite SC series receiver.

        as far as onkyo:
my roommate has the onkyo 607. only 1 device will work via hdmi but luckily it's the cable box. after you watch tv for about 10 mins the pathetic capacitors on the hdmi board build up enough juice to make the handshake then you are free to swap to the other hdmi devices. i posted a video in another thread on here on how to fix it. it's not a hard fix.

i bought my dad an onkyo HTIB for fathers day. hdmi is shit on it too so i just use optical.

Hey, I'm glad you mentioned ARC, and maybe you can help me understand what it's good for.

My Yamaha has it, and I have read a little about it, but I cannot think of any practical use for it. I mean, even if I was watching stuff using an over-the-air antenna, I would still run the antenna into the receiver first, and only have the single HDMI connection between the TV and receiver, anyway.

I just can't think of any scenario where I would need audio from the TV. Any signal that carries audio goes into my receiver, and the TV is just a monitor.

          What am I missing?

you shouldn't be able to connect an antenna into your receiver. i dont think receivers have coaxial in unless its for am/fm. it is coaxial cable that goes to your TV's digital tuner.

if you used an antenna to get locals, to get audio you would have to use a seperate audio cable out of your TV back into your receiver. now it can just use the same HDMI cable it's already using.

My bad. You're right about the A/V receiver not having a coax input. However, my satellite receivers have always had a separate coax input for the antenna, as does my PC. I've never had to run antenna directly to the TV or have audio come out of the TV and into thye A/V receiver. Heck, I don't even use an antenna anymore (get HD locals through Dish), so it sounds like ARC doesn't do anything for me.

Oh yea I forgot a lot of TVs have built in media centers so if you stream a movie on your tv you can output digital audio back to your receiver. So yes useless for most but has some validity beyond antennas.

The on screen stuff is really cool (cool graphics and user interface vs the old DOS look that one of my Onks has). I think they are normally $500 online, but you can score a deal if you wait or you may find something similar or even nicer. I paired it with a Polk PSW-505 sub and some new Klipsch towers and surrounds, and it sounds great.

By the way, I scored that Polk sub for $200, and it's a BEAST. To me, that's cheap for a sub, and everything else in that price range was weaksauce. You'd have to spend a lot more to do better, from what I've seen.
I'm running that Onkyo receiver, Yamaha towers, Polk CS-10 center channel, and the factory front Onkyo bookshelfs as my rears. Oh and a nice fucking SVS-12 sub. Maybe I'll look for that receiver after the first of the year, but no shit, this set up is knocking my picture frames off of the walls.

Don't you own an SVS sub?

Anything you purchase from SVS is audiophile quality gear. End of story. You don't need a PB-12 or PB-13 to make clean authoritative bass in a small to medium size room.
