My advice is to watch Amazon, Newegg, Slickdeals, etc for a banging price on a solid receiver, and piece your shit together.

I scored a nice Yamaha and will never look back. IMO, a $250 system, or even a $400 system will just leave you wanting to upgrade.

So what 7.1, truehd, or dts-hd receiver do you recommend?

          I'd say Denon or Yamaha.

Tim- it's not my fault you ignore the hundreds of thousands of people with the issue. Do you work for Onkyo, because you sure do have their nuts all up in your mouth. Of course I'm bitter. I paid damn good money for a receiver that doesn't perform. And Onkyo doesn't care to make it right, for anyone.

The issue has nothing to do with cables. It's the capacitors that are the issue. But by all means, continue on giving bad advice every time you pound on that keyboard. It amuses the rest of us. I WISH someone had spoken up about the issue prior to my purchase. I did a ton of research, and made my purchase decision. Then all the issues started being reported.

Could Denon/Yamaha be found under $500?

I have a Onkyo tx-806 (I think) reciever now and its great! My only gripe is it takes a while for the PS3 and projector to handshake over HDMI. My buddy has a cheaper Onkyo (HTIB type) and his is much quicker, go figure. Throws out some serious heat too.

All that being said it works and sounds great. Next time Ill go with Denon though, I hear they are awsome. Everyone told me if you have 0 expirience with home theaters go with Onkyo for ease since Denon's are a bit more complex. No sweat though because you wont touch a decent Denon system for under $500

Onkyo builds overpriced TRASH. Onkyo sells overpriced TRASH. Onkyo won't honor the warranty they provide with the TRASH they sold you. IF you buy an Onkyo and then DO have to ship it to their ONLY service center in Denver Colorado...at YOUR expense both ways....your shit will return 2-3 months later...with MORE damage than when you shipped it to them...with no warranty on the repairs they made..and thats IF they even send you back the same stereo you sent them. Ask me how I would know. Onkyo SUCKS. If you gave me Onkyo's best receiver it would be on Craigslist within an hour.

If you want something that will work RELIABLY...get something besides Onkyo...Yamaha, Denon, Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic, Toshiba, JVC, Harman Kardon.

                oh yeah....FUCK ONKYO.

OK...At this point, I'll just leave it to you and your infinite wisdom. Because this back and forth banter thing is getting old, Brent.

Regarding the system that I posted as a suggestion for Cobraman, in consideration of his budget http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882120182 I'm sure those 54 reviews averaging all 5 eggs also think that their Onkyo system "sucks" and is defective as well, thus resulting in a 5 out 5 rating.

Oh, and I just recently corrected an HDMI issue for a neighbor on his Denon 4311. However, I'll won't elaborate further as I don't want to freak you out too much by making you aware of the realities of HDMI issues with other A/V gear outside of Onkyo brand.

Anyways...I'm out on this particular thread. I gave my 2 cents in post#14 in a very thorough fashion. Those are my experiences. And as they may be subjective, it is the truth. And how I've rectified issues for others in regards to long cable throws with 28 AWG vs 24 AWG, well, just cite one example on methods of addressing such issues. HDCP is problematic in many cases for a variety of reasons, but I digress.

                  Take it easy.

I picked up a Yamaha RX-V867 a month or two ago for $400 through Newegg. It's leaps and bounds better than any Onkyo I've owned, and no handshake issues at all so far. The on screen stuff is really cool (cool graphics and user interface vs the old DOS look that one of my Onks has). I think they are normally $500 online, but you can score a deal if you wait or you may find something similar or even nicer. I paired it with a Polk PSW-505 sub and some new Klipsch towers and surrounds, and it sounds great.

By the way, I scored that Polk sub for $200, and it's a BEAST. To me, that's cheap for a sub, and everything else in that price range was weaksauce. You'd have to spend a lot more to do better, from what I've seen.

You can't blame us (and the other thousands of customers) who are bitter because our shit doesn't work like it should, and a little research shows that it's a widespread issue. You've just been lucky.

My problems come with 6 ft HDMI cables that happen to work perfectly with the Yamaha. And they worked fine for a while and then one day just took a dump. And eventually, or sporadically, they'll work fine again for a while.

It's not the cable. It's not the settings. It's Onkyo build quality, plain and simple. When they have shotty build quality, you get some that work and some that don't. Some that work for a while and then stop. Some that stay in and out of the shop.

So just because yours works and maybe your friends' work and hell, maybe even half of them work, that doesn't mean that they have good build quality or that you're some kind of wizard because you've not experienced the problem yet.

But when a large number of them don't work, and it's well-documented, then it's safe to say that they are an inferior product and it's only fair to warn those asking for advice. To ignore the huge number of similar complaints that you're fully aware of, just because your own experience is different, and actually recommend the product to someone, is pretty douchebaggerous.

You probably won't find that one in your thesaurus, by the way.

I went to best buy and picked up a HTIB setup with a Denon receiver and Boston Acoustics 5.1 speaker setup for $600 if that may interest you.

I have the sr706 and have some HDMI issues. It happens maybe 1-10 times that I turn on my system, and have to turn a component off and then back on to get the HDMI to work.

To you and Lason - that's the infamous HDCP issue. It will get worse. Eventually it will just flat out not complete the handshake at all, and you'll have a $600+ receiver that's good for nothing other than listening to the radio

                                OP,

Yamaha has great stuff, never seen a handshake issue in the past couple of years and several units I've helped install/part together.

If you want to keep it cheap-ish and great quality, get a really good Yamaha receiver, and wait for a smoking deal on speakers. Get a great sub too, they make all the difference.
