I bought my STi in AZ and paid their taxes, and was issued a 90 day non resident dealer tag for my temporary registration.
Talked with the Tax office in Tarrant County and the lady told me the car would have to be inspected in Texas, and have proof of inspection/insurance, and bring the sales papers in to show taxes paid (if the Tarrant County taxes were more than Phoenix, I'd have to pay the difference, but don't believe they are).
My problem is I might not be able to drive the car from California where I'm at now, to Texas before the expiration of the non-resident tag I'm currently displaying...
I'm supposed to work in Denver after I'm through in CA, and I am trying to avoid having to make the Cali to Texas to Denver drive just for the sake of having it registered...
Would it in ANY way make more sense to have it registered in California or Denver, then re registered in Texas at a later date? The cost in gas and other logistics along the way would outway the cost of re-regristration later on, not to mention 5 days of cross country driving.
Or, is there some type of waiver Tarrant County could issue with regard to the Texas state inspection due to it being a brand new car? The first lady I talked to at the Tarrant County Tax Office couldn't wait to get me off the phone and was pretty firm on me having to drive the car to Texas to get it inspected.
What do you think? I can show mail received at both a California and a Denver address - though I dread having to go down to the Tax office in LA County, lol..
What happens if I stick my old Texas plates on my new car from my WRX that I traded in, just for show while I'm in Cali and Denver? LoL.... and just play dumb if I ever get pulled over... "Duh, Officer, the dealer told me I could just transfer my old plates straight over since I was out of state..."
