  • Garage door insulation

This summer I put in the radiant barrier metallic stuff on the door. Tm I should have the styrofoam backing for it from Lowes. Anyone done this and have tips for keeping it secure and not popping out like the stuff in now?

When I did mine, I just cut it slightly larger and bowed it a little to get each panel in. Works like a charm, nothing has fallen out, and it doesn't even look like it has moved. I did, originally, use foil tape around the outside just to give it a cleaner appearance and help aid it from falling out. The summer killed the foil tape, but as it turns out it was such a tight fit it didn't need anything to hold it in place. So, whatever you do, don't use foil tape unless you want to replace it at least once a summer.

I did the opposite of bcoop, nearly and cut it short on one side and then used spray foam to hold it in. Unless we're talking about different things.

Anyway, I would've though bcoop's way would be better but if the tape does not work - that sucks. Either way, the spray foam has some adhesive ability and fills in gaps.

I did my previous homes door with the foil barrier and used foil tape to secure it along with moving the hinges, etc to the outside of it. It was still holding fine five or so years later when I moved. I wouldn't replace the barrier with foam. Do you have the side gaskets on the door?

This is what I ordered from LOWES none of the ones around my house had it in stock. Guy I talked to said they don't order it till after Thanksgiving for whatever reason. I ordered it online and it was here in two days. Go to the lowes website and search for...

My garage faces west, so the intense heat just made the tape peel and bubble. Not everyone would hae this issue. But f you cut it larger like I did, the tape is a nonissue, because the foam board won't move. I should also add, I double layered the foam. 3/4" thick with foil facing the door, and 1/2" with the foil facing in towards the garage. There is no wiggle because it's packed in there tight.

That's what I'm about to do as well. I already have a few rolls of that barrier. Need to see if Lowes has any of that foam in stock up here where I live. Gonna use the liquid nails like someone mentioned. If you get up before I do, post up some pics.

Turns out with the silver barrier the panels snug right in and do not need anything to hold them in... Oh and order two kits I am a dumbass and did not read the whole page... Off to order one more set. I am pleased so far though.

Edit. Will post pics when I figure out how to get them off this damm I-pad

I am confused probably me... I can't get my mind around it. Sorry for being stupid but did you do foil against the door then foam then foil then foam again? Or foil double foam foil? I put the foil against the door so it would reflect heat before it hit the foam. Then the foam inside so it would hold heat in during winter.... Does foil tape really add anything to the R value?

As far as foil tape and/or foam like I used - it blocks the draft at a minimum. Both would add some R-value by sealing the cracks between the foam and metal - there will be at least SOME not matter how tight.

I should have been more clear. I didn't use a separate foil. I used the foil backed foam. It's foil on one side, and white on the other, with lettering in dark blue. Bought it at HD. They also had some other stuff that was not foil backed, and the foam itself was blue.

If you look at a cross section of my garage door, going from "outside" (driveway side) ---> inside.... it's aluminum door, foil, foam, foam, foil. Like I said, I've got two pieces of foil backed foam board in each panel. 3/4" closest to the outside, 1/2" closest to the inside of the garage.

I used foil tape for appearance only. My door is white, and with the foil facing in, it looked funny. I only used foil tape to match the foil/silver appearance.
